James from Northeast Numismatics here. It is possible that this piece is a brass or base metal contemporary counterfeit (the color seems to suggest so). Many very good counterfeits exist which were usually silvered at the time.
Thanks for the input. The photos from this particular seller are rarely accurate, so the color is a crapshoot. Does anyone have an idea of what these should weigh? I don't have access to my Krause or Spink at the moment, and Predecimal's catalogue does not give a weight... Before I have the coin sent, I can ask the seller to weigh it for me.

I think that is an example of poor lighting.

<< <i>Either way... I think you should keep the new one, and sell me the other one you bought a couple of weeks ago. >>
See, now if they both were the same denomination, I might be willing to accommodate you, but unfortunately I need this for the type set...
The ugly one pricewise is going to be the dollar. Since I will want it in at least AU: *KACHING!*
I communicated with the seller on this one and raised my concerns. He says that he's sold many of this type over the years, and that the cast/brass counterfeits are easy to tell from the legit ones. He says that this one weighs out fine. Regardless, he said that if I didn't like it I could return it. It's a seller I regularly do business with, so I'm not worried.
If it's legit, it looks to be an easy AU with a shot at an UNC. If the latter, it's almost as good a deal as the 18d proof was. This one cost about the same.
