Stolen Coin Collection, Can they be traced???

I have a question that i need answered. For many year's , My late father purchased a great deal of gold Maple Leaf coin's from the Canadian Mint. The coin's disapeared after his death. Who can i contact ? And doe's the Royal Canadian Mint keep actual record's of purchase's made and would any of these coin's have serial number's or a Number of the set's purchased... Also what about the U.S. Assay Office? Do they keep record's of purchase's as well?

Thank's in advance for any info.,

  • Please accept my condolences on your losses.

Unfortunately there isn't much you can do besides filing a police report.

Bullion coins have no serial numbers or other individual identification marks. Even if the Mints keep the record of who bought what from them, resales are not registered anywhere, so even determining what your Dad bought, and when, wouldn't tie his coins to those now possessed by any particular person.

Have you checked with the local banks to see if he had a safe deposit box somewhere other than his regular bank?

If you are certain he didn't hide or dispose of them before his death, there should be a fairly small suspect pool.

  • I have some of these. They came from the mint with a Certificate of Authenticity that has a registration number. But Roy is correct, there is nothing connects the cert # to the coin as far as markings.
