Interesting questions. Actually, lots of coin shows to coin drops as a promotional thing.

Of course, if the coin never shows up, can you be sure it was put into circulation

This has been done a lot in the last several years to promote coin shows. Usually
there is a reward for presenting the coin at the show in the form of a very strong
buy price. This has been done at least in NY, Seattle, and Milwaukee and probably
several others.
