What is on this Eisenhower coin............

I recently purchased this IKE and have begun to wonder what causes this "patina". It shows up most prominently under flourescent lighting (my microscope lighting) and is nearly invisible under incandescent lighting.

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

I have an SBA with that type of haze. Some say it's dip residue (but dipping clad coins makes no sense to me).

I've seen that haze on many business strike Ikes. I am not an Ike specialist, but I believe they are worth more without that haze.

Storage in the wronge type of flips during mailing to PCGS for grading. According to Russ this has caused hazing on proof coins that he was able to clean and upgrade. You might send him a PM and ask if it happens on MS coins also. Also if you put IKE in your title you might get some help from the Ike guys.

I believe it's improper storage prior to being slabbed. The coin has turned in the slab.

I don't know the cause. I've seen it in many Ikes for sale... often higher grade ones. You say it is barely visible in normal lighting.... interesting.

  • Yuck!! Prbably PVC from a crappy flip.

I'd send it in to PCGS for grade guarantee review.

i thought it looked like early PVC haze. you could probably send it back to PCGS, they fix problems, they just don't publicize the fact that they do.
