Yay or Nay for you?

I bought a 1921 Peace Dollar yesterday. Do you like the coin or is this one a no for you? The images of this coin suck... The luster is fairly nice in hand, and I just put MS 62.. but could be a 63.. Debate away

Excellent strike for a 1921... and a little original color to boot. I like it!

Random comment... am I the only one who thinks Liberty's cheeks are swollen enough that perhaps she had her wisdom teeth out in 1921?

  • Nice and original. I like the hair details. Yours is 3/4 the way there and better than most others. Most 21s have flat hair detail and it should keep them out of their grades. I think yours is worth more for this fact alone.

Overall I like the coin, but the two hits high on the cheek keep it at a 62 IMHO.

What sorta value would you put on a coin like this?
  • Dollar value, I cant tell you. I think if you were looking for a 62 and found one with better hair detail, you would own a nicer coin than a 62 with flat hair detail.

I like it quite a bit, but can't help you with pricing....
My style is impetuous, my defense is impregnable !
  • OK well do you agree with 62 from the images? Grated they are bad, but imagine some decent luster
  • With its eye appeal, yes its a 62. If it were a white Peace I would say no.

Edit: Think it has a strong shot at 63 also.

  • Heres what MOST 21s hair details look like. This is an anacs 62.

  • I saw some of the same things when looking at Heritage auction archives. Alot of weak strikes. Thanks for the honest opinions

I like it. You dont see many stuck that well.imageimage

  • Yes, after looking around I agree the strike is better than some, but not as good as others. I think the ammount of small hits would limit the grade, so hence the 62. I also like the toning. I think it adds some uniqueness to the coin. Overall a coin at the price I paid, would buy again, and again....

Actually that is a better strike with great eye appeal from your pic.
If it looks better in hand you have a shot at 63.
PCGS holdered in MS62 are getting $300. on eBay and don't look as nice as yours.
I think it will go 62-63 and could fetch $350-450 on eBay depending how it grades.
These have been going through the roof lately in all grades.

Great score, congrats! Thanks for sharing the pics.

  • Thanks for the values. These pics are horrid if you ask me, well not a total wash, but as far as luster goes, they are. Thanks for the nice comments

I agree with those who have preceeded me... great strike for a '21.

In my 1900 year set, I looked far and wide for a V nickel with fully struck corn in the wreath. I own the only one I ever came across in any grade and it's a 63. As I see it, you own a choice type coin, in an affordable grade, with a key feature lacking on most higher grade specimines - with color to boot! In short: I think you own a GREAT coin!

I likey!!image Great strike and originality. So many of these are dipped out.

I say MS63 depending on how bad the scuff is under her eye and on her cheek.

That is as good a strike that I have ever seen. You'll go to a lot of shows before you'll find another. I agree with the grade but the strike makes it a centerpiece.

Excellent color for a Peace dollar and excellent strike for a 1921. Can't quite tell if it might be a VAM-3.

although i don't know what you paid, i'm pretty sure i would too!

beautiful 21, i'd take it over just about every flat, dull, dipped and stripped out 64's or 65's that i've seen.

(ps. looking forward to your next posts in 2007, lol)
  • Exceptionally nice '21---would look great in a type set. I agree with you that it's probably a 62 (with a shot at 63) but given its' eye appeal---who cares. It's much better looking than most of the 63s out there.

I would give it a point for strike alone and let it live as a 63.

You're gonna get 63 money for that coin from anyone "in the know" about 21s.

I will post a c lose up shot of it here in a bit.... Maybe that will help... just the area involved. Just per say it is a VAM 3 then what does that do to the value?

In gem, there is currently a 50%-75% premium for that VAM. It is generally less in the lower mint state grades but still significant.

ps, that's a heck of a nice close-up, mr. DeMille........
  • I could have got closer... but that would put it too much outta proportion if you ask me
  • Off for grading the coin went. We shall see how it does... NGC has it.... I am hoping for MS 62, but It could go as high as MS 63* Which would make it a triple yay!
