Harry was an advanced collector very interested in die varieties in US gold coins. This series has not been well documented for die varieties and consequently he was continually comparing coins and looking for minor differences. By having those glasses on, he could hold coins in both hands and compare them far easier.
I think the photo fully illustrates his enthusiasm for searching. I attended many an auction sale with him and he was always well prepared when he went into battle!!
PNG member, numismatic dealer since 1965. Operates a retail store, also has exhibited at over 1000 shows. I firmly believe in numismatics as the world's greatest hobby, but recognize that this is a luxury and without collectors, we can all spend/melt our collections/inventories.
I'll buy the magnifyer attached to the glasses routine, but I think the smaller extended magnifier sticking way out there is just showing off.
Admit it. You just have no clue how to use the damn thing.
Actually, I always thought it looked pretty cool on the cover of the catalog...much cooler than him standing next to an oil well or a Republican party elephant logo.

I dont know why, but I half expected the latest swimsuit model when I glanced at the thread title
judging from the mans collection, that setup worked for him, so it's good enough for me

That works for me, too, but I don't think you'd be able to see the coins very well (although you probably wouldn't care ).
