What do I have here? For starters, note the spike at Liberty's eye.

Looks to me like a long nock 1878-S and I'm already quite envious and jealous. . .
VAM 27 (long nock) is stated to have the broken D on DOLLAR but it doesn't have a spike in the eye. Can we get some close up pictures just to be certain. The photos make me believe it's a long knock but my eyes aren't what they used to be. . .
You've hit one of the holy grail coins for the 1878-S VAM series I do believe!!!

BTW, the coin has very strong PL characteristics that don't show up in the image. In fact, it arguably looks like a branch mint proof. It's a special coin, whatever it is.

It very well could be a presentation piece marking the first Morgan dollar struck in San Francisco. The B1 (long nock) reverse was used first, and they're never found uncirculated, let alone apparently high grade uncirculated.

Sorry, no photos yet, but the VAM 58 attribution has been confirmed. I expect the coin will go to auction because I have no clue what it is worth.

I'm sure glad it is a long nock, now we all have something to watch for in the World of Super VAMs!
Thanks for reporting back, Andy, you made my day!
