Need Help with an eBay problem

Any opinions are appreciated. I recently sold some newer Stargell cards on ebay. A buyer bought about $60 worth and paid through paypal. She did not opt for the insurance that I offered. I mailed them on 2/28 via Priority Mail. She has not received them as of today. Questions: what is my obligation? The reality is that I can't prove I shipped, and she can't prove she neve received the cards. I know I had the address right. She has good feedback. In the future, this makes me want to start using delivery confirmation or something else when the item is over $50 or more. Any opinions?

  • If you can't prove she got them, I'm pretty sure Paypal will side with her in any dispute she takes against you. You should ALWAYS use delivery confirmation (it's 14 cents if you print a shipping label through PP) and signature confirmation for anything over $250. Sorry, but looks like you might end up eating this one...

If she paid with paypal you have to be able to prove delivery or she can say she never got it. Paypal will always rule in the buyer's favor if you can't prove she received it.

If you use priority mail and do it online you can get del. conf. free with USPS.

If it's over $250 you have to have a signature delivery, insured, registered, etc.

If she doesn't get the package and files a claim you'll end up giving her the money back.

On Paypal they have a page that tells you what you have to do to be protected against chargebacks

Quick answer In a nutshell; Without proof of mailing, sellers' are screwed. I always use a Del Conf. it's only half a buck. Paypal will issue a buyback against your account. Could get messy. BTW, What's a stargel?

As mentioned, you need some proof of delivery. I use DC on everything I sell, whether its $5 or $5000. For the few pennies, it is clearly worth it. I had a buyer claim he never received an item once, and I ran the DC number through the tracking system - it showed in fact that the item was delivered. I told him that, and all of a sudden he "found" the item...how about that.

Unfortunately, I don't believe that a receipt from the PO is proof enough for PayPal. And, I think the receipts only show the zip code where the item was mailed to. It doesn't show proof of actual delivery to the address sent.

You will have to refund the money. As a condition of selling through Paypal, you accept the terms of service, including that proof of delivery is required. You have no proof of delivery, therefore, you will lose a Paypal dispute. Everything that you ship through Paypal should have either Delivery Confirmation or Signature Confirmation for items over $250. If you don't, you run the risk of having charges reversed should the buyer initiate a claim.

If you print your postage through Paypal, Delivery Confirmation is only $0.14. You can't beat that.

Items rarely got lost by the USPS........but without proof the seller would be libel according to PAYPAL......
