If you consign a coin for auction, does the auction house make recommendations on resubmission, etc?

Semi-related to RYK's thread...

Say you have a coin that you think is a liner. You want to send it to Heritage or ANR for their next auction. Do they advise you about resubmitting it? If so, do they do the resubmission for you? If so, do they offer it unsolicited or is that something you must ask for?

In all seriousness, whose advice at any of the major auction houses would you accept as having particular insight or value in regard to resubmitting coins?

In all probability, you're not going to get that level of service unless it's part of the consignment negotiations.

If the coin is all there with a strong possibility of an upgrade, many times the crack out guys as well as other dealers/collectors will push the price realized up to the level it deserves anyway, with out having to have it re-submitted.(I am reffering to the larger auction firms like Heritage/ANR where there is plenty of auction lot viewing.)

For one, I would trust Halperin's advice. He has a good track record.

    I agree. Anyone else?
  • It they are in old holders, they will tell you to leave 'em "as-is" to fetch more $$!
  • Maybe I just don't understand the question. Can't you just open your mouth and ask?

"I want to sell my collection and there are a few coins that might upgrade. Who's your best grader? Can he look and them and tell us whether it would be worthwhile to re-submit?"

What are they going to say? No?

If that auction house is Heritage, and your consignment is noteworthy they may well advise you on upgrades if time permits before the auction. I had them do this for me once. And in my case nothing upgraded however, the nice coins still brought equivalent money. It only takes two crackout artists to see your coin as an upgrade to ensure it brings close to the next grade. As far as skilled upgraders, Heritage has all the other auction companies beat by a lot. There is much less chance that another house will purposely handle upgrades for you. I just don't see a Stack's or ANR having much interest in something like that.

Heritage does make a point of trying for upgrades, either during their own buying or for clients. Better to get a coin upgraded and placed in auction where it brings more for everyone than to leave it in doubt.
