When did 1895-O morgans go up by so much?

I have a lousy one, toned dark in G condition that I bought a few years ago raw for less than $100. My 2005 Redbook lists the 1895-O in VF at $175. Today I saw Numismedia listing the date in G at $230, and now I see the PCGS lists it at $625 in VF. Did this happen as quickly as it seems? Is it all tied to the price of silver? Are the on-line price guides wrong? Does anyone have a grey sheet?

Greysheet starts at VG. 1895-O is among the classic rarities prior to the distribution of the government's hoard. Like the 1885-CC and 1903-O, those releases did little to affect the circulated populations. The fact that, even after that, the uncirculated populations are so low really adds to the overall valuation scheme. This one always dances with the demand. "Is it all tied to the price of silver?" I would be hard-pressed to find an example of an issue that is less so.

It shot up in value about 2 years ago, then has been steadily creeping up since. I bought an XF for about $200 a little over 2 years ago. I checked a few months later, and Coin values had it at $600. I was convinced it was a typo, until the next issue said the same thing. When it got up to $1000 retail in Coin Values, I sold it (actually, traded it) for a 1916-D Merc.

    Dec 2004 Coin Values has a G4 @ 125, VF20 @ 350, XF40 @ 425 and AU50 @ 1500
    Dec 2005 Coin values has a G4 @ 225, VF20 @ 600, XF40 @ 1000 and AU50 @ 2000

Looks like the mid-range coins had the largest increases, with the extremes not having as large of increases.

By the way, where the heck do they get their prices? I rarely see dealers selling coins for as high as Coin Prices lists them.

I think it's another example of price/value having started to reflect demand/rarity. The 1893-S and the 1889-CC have long been the most dominant (and still so) coins in the series, perhaps to the detriment of other coins. Another example of a rare coin which started to dramatically to price a few years ago is the 1894 Philly. It has literally been in the shadow of the '93-S for too long!

I thought the same thing that this coin all of a sudden awakened about two years ago, along with a couple of other dates. A nice choice AU 95-o should really get some intrest. I remember not to long ago, a nice Au would run about 700.00

The 95-o mirrors the 92-s quite a lot cept that the 92-s is cheaper in vg but twice the price or better in 58

That's beautiful, and I'm not a toning fan. Just to help me learn, Keith, what's the grade on that? I'd say 55, even considering weak strikes.

"Awakened" or "promoted"? That's the question.

For such a "tough" date these seem to be plenty available. There are a number of dealers who over a year ago felt these were well over-priced. Because of striking issues it is very possible to find these in XF/AU grade selling for VF money by unknowledgeable dealers. I've picked up 2. And because of that I actively look for the date.....and have found plenty of them. While the majority seem cleaned you can still find original ones. Good luck.
