Ok, I sort of get the First Strike American Silver Eagles. It's not my cup of tea, but these are bullion not made for circulation and the fresh coins off of new dies are labeled as First Strike.
That's all fine and dandy, but what the freak is this?
Really, as soon as you don't believe it's possible to get more silly something comes along and give a whole new meaning to total lameness.

I almost feel embarrassed that it's in a PCGS holder. Did David Hall have to hold his nose to accept THAT contract?
Talk about cheapening a brand - what a shame.
David - I know you lurk... What the %$^@^& were you thinking?
Prolly get me banned for saying all of this, but... Yuck!

At least that's what COULD be happening. I can furnish no proof of this. During my planned China visit in 2008, perhaps I'll be able to investigate this further.
I swear by the powers granted to me by my 1957 Kelloggs Corn Flakes Jr Detective Badge that this is all true as best as my imagination will allow.

Exactly. This is America, where greed rules the empire. I guess PCGS feels the need to directly compete with bottom feeders like SGS. Market share baby, market share. Integrity be damned, there's money to be made.
One B/U bison nickel............................................................................................... $0.05
One plastic slab...................................................................................................... $1.00
Watching PCGS repeatedly lose credibility in the name of corporate greed...... Priceless.

It certainly does cheapen the image of PCGS.

PCGS "First Strike" Coin Program
Are these nickels considered bullion ???
As a second thought- this slab looks a lot cheaper than those new ANACS monstrosity's
Sad
That cannot be a real PCGS item, because PCGS always gives a numeric grade, right? Like MS-69 or whatever. I've never seen a PCGS slab with "Brilliant Uncirculated" as the goddamned grade

PCGS is TELLING us that this is a First Strike Brilliant Uncirculated Bison---- who are we to question anything ---now lets all just take
another sip of that there Kool-Aid, then maybe we too can get those nice upgrades...
Really quiet around here
I think "first strike" anything is weak...

You are right, Bear... As you often are. I happen to disagree with you in that "It does not matter if it has our approval". As a business owner, I seek the approval of my customers in every business move... Looking to make the majority of the customers representing my base happy.
So far, PCGS's base has been the higher end collector/ dealer market. This new product, which cheapens the brand, is aimed at a different base. If this new base is where the future dollars are for David, then have at it. Still, it cheapens the PCGS brand - it's cheesy product aimed at fleecing the unsuspecting casual buyer.
If deals like this with A-Mark are the financial future for PCGS, shooting for the lower-tier business, then "it is what it is". But the road of business is littered with the wreckage of otherwise successful companies turning from their solid customer bases to pursue new ventures. Corporate ADHD. I hope it works for CLCT, 'cause those crappy plastic slabs will be around for an embarassingly long, LONG time.

new coin collectors who havent figured out what they are doing yet, and when they figure out that this is a worthless crap coin it might turn them off to collecting, so it will make money now but what later?

it is like a wine company starting to sell grape juice.
Why don't they just cut to the chase and put a, A-Mark, QVC or HSN privy mark on those slabs, so they don't cheapen their own brand name?
What will they think of next?

<< <i>Not that it will, but if the whole "First Strike™" gimmick helps them make money such that they could reduce fees or increase quality of service for "real" stuff, is it then a good thing for those of us that won't want anything to do with these (everyone except Conder101, I guess)? To me, the concept of the first batch of coins for the year being called "First Strike™" is a bunch of hooey. First Strike has always meant the first coins struck by the dies when they were new. Add a ™ and it can mean something totally different.

They do the same thing with the Silver Eagles. Since you have to submit 500 and most will not grade MS69 they offer a cheap substitute to get the minimum % of a bulk order through. This offers not grade but guarantees something like MS65-MS68. Unfortunately there is no sereial number on these so they are no good for registry purposes.
Someone must have submitted a big bag from the mint and set a minimum grade and then everything else gets these slabs.
