Question: Why Are All The Heavy Hitters Taking New Jobs

image I would hope it's not "Show Me The Money". And what do these changes mean to Numismatics, if anything?

There are many reasons, but the more popular ones include having the chance to move to another more likeable city, having to travel less, and a substantial increase in salary.

Why Are All The Heavy Hitters Taking New Jobs?

They're not. I'll bet you can't name ten heavy hitters who have taken "new jobs".

No biggie. Stick around awhile, people move all the time. Firms come and go. Pick up a numismatic mag from 20 years ago and you won't recognize half the names.

Your right Andy. These are the only names I could come up with:

    Imhof
    Isaac
    Taylor
    Fahey
    Standish
    Feld
    Schecter
    Winter

I appreciate your thought provoking answer to my question.

No belittling intended and I'm not going to name names, but not all those eight named are exactly heavy hitters.

I have actually been told by several people on that list why they chose to change companies. All of the reasons were different - apparently thewhole thing is not the conspiracy it seems to be...

I'll bet that if Martin Paul saw this thread, he would be pissed.

Remember all the job hopping that went on with technology executives in the late 1990's? We all know what happened shortly after that.

Besides Martin Paul toss in Andy Lustig as well (lol.

So that brings it to 10. Wonder if Andy would call all 10 heavy weights? In any case those are significant players. Heritage has added a number of big players to their staffs over the past 2 years.
If you include all the moves that Bob Hughes makes (lol) he can add 2 or 3 by himself.....and he's not done yet!

If you consider other ex-Heritage people who moved to Superior,
shifts in Teletrade staff, additions to auction house staffs, even Legend's newer buyer, etc. you can come up with many more names.

Can we include Noe moving from his coin firm to you know where?

As with any high-profile profession, you're always worth more to someone else than your current employer.

It's been said that a complete collection of Bobby Hughes business cards is harder to assemble than a complete collection of Proof Gold coins.

What makes the difference? This is America and we are free to go where we can. I think the implication here is that the market is about to collapse.

Since I am a collector (no investment coins for me), a collapse doesn't scare me at all.

I concur. Since "Mr. Roberts" just took the position of Chief Justice, I can't see him moving this soon. When QDB jumps ship, then we'll all know the end is near.

Ratner works for a firm? Isn't he a one man show?

Wouldn't be surprised that at the end of this market cycle, that some or most of those "players" are back working for Heritage, Spectrum and the other biggies (ie. closed up shop).

The people who have solid and profitable business don't have to or want to leave (would you?).

Some people like change from time to time. There's more to life than a profitable business and a change doesn't necessarily mean that business isn't doing well.

And yes, Ratner works by himself. If he went to work for someone, that would to me would mean he lost tremendous confidence in the market.

It could also mean that someone else has such extraordinary confidence in the market that he can offer a tempting deal.

So in a more general sense, when you see someone take a new job, it is just as likely that it is the result of excessive bullishness (on the part of the employer) as it is the result of bearishness on the part of the employee.
