SAE toning experiment: 4 months.

I've seen several other people's posts about attempts to "naturally" tone coins. So in early November I decided to try a toning experiment myself.

I reasoned that the paper content, dyes, inks, etc. of some of the older coin folders are contributors to and maybe the source of the best colors on toned coins. So I placed an absolutely blast-white 1988 SAE face down on a stack of early 1960s Saturday Evening Post magazines. These magazines are filled with vibrant ads, different types of newsprint, and the covers are full-color as well. I didn't think that the chemicals would still be rolling off of the magazines, but I figured there was some essence left.

I placed the stack on a chest of drawers in my bedroom, kept at about 68*, with little sunlight and only occasional artifical light. Humidity was relatively low since this was over the winter. For a control, I used a white 1964 Kennedy and a darkly toned 1943 walker. The coins were placed about 3 inches apart on the stack of magazines.

After about 30 days, color began to emerge on the SAE, but not the other coins. I must have accidentally slid the coins close to each other, because in early January I noticed they were touching.

Color began to compound more quickly with the rims touching, so I've left them like that since discovering it.

It has now been about 4.5 months since I started. The once blast-white SAE now looks like this:

Yellow is the most common color for SAEs, so it's not especially exciting. But the hint of blue and green seen between 2:00 and 3:00 is kind of cool. There was no evidence of the fingerprints on the coin prior to the toning.

There is no change in color for the Kennedy or the Walker.

I'm turning the coin over today to see if I can get the obverse to tone, and as before, I'll keep the two control coins touching since that may be part of the catalyst causing the colors.

We are like children who look at print and see a serpent in the last letter but one, and a sword in the last.

    You're half way there.
Now take a small jar of JeweLuster and dump out the contents. Allow the residue to remain.
Place your silver eagle, just as it is inside the jar, leaning it up against the side (don't let it lay at the bottom).

Replace the lid and leave it on a shelf for about two weeks.

Presto! You'll be astounded at the beauty and the kaleidoscope of colors.

I've got an 84 olympic proof sitting in a Fraft envelope in a window. Nothing much has happened yet.
