So I was thinking...

If a MS65 coin lists for $50, then that is what many consider it's value (less 20% or so off the guide price).

Rarely does a raw coin sell for the same price...usually lower. That same $50 coin may sell for $30 raw and $42 slabbed by a leading grading service.

When this is the case in so many instances, shouldn't we actually consider the price of the slabbed coin to be the raw price with a "slabbing " fee added?

This came to mind because I saw a raw MS65 Mercury dime sell for $18. It lists for $25. If you want it slabbed that would take the price up to $30 - $35. Why buy a raw coin and take a shot at "grading service roulette" when you could just buy a slabbed coin and forgo the grading fee and chance it may not make the grade.

If this is rambling then just ignore me. I have a headache and haven't been thinking clearly today.

Modern proofs are the same way. I have compiled a Registry Set of proof Kennedys (I'm only missing 5 coins) and everything from 1973 to 2005 (with the exception of '79 & '81 Type II) is PR69DCAM while almost everything else is at least cameo. My average cost per coin is just over $15, there's no way I could have found all the proof sets and submitted them for grading for that kind of price.

I do think anyone that goes through the effort of "making" their own coins deserves a pat on the back.

Don't think so hard you'll give yourself a headache.!!
It seems like a logical thing to do....Instead of going thru all the hastle of trying to find a good grade like a m67 or ms 68.......
