buying un-certified gold coins

Will you all recommend a listing of GOOD (safe) coin dealers for USA gold coins.

NOT in MS grades, but from VF45 to AU58. In particular the $1 gold, $5 Libertys, and $20 Libertys.

I don't mind buying unslabbed, but only from businesses that guarantee their gold coins are genuine.

I've looked at Harlan Burk's site, but some seem a little high. I sent an email asking them if they guarantee their un-certified gold coins as real gold and they said yes.

Thanks

Buddy

Counterfeits are only part of the prolem. Many raw US gold coins hve been cleaned or messed with in some way. Also, many of them are overgraded. Do yourself a favor and buy a slabed coin from one of the top tier TPGS's and, if you want it raw, crack it out.

  • I want to stay away from buying raw gold on Ebay. I've never done it and will not.

Seems when buying any PCGS or NGC, and some ANACS coins, one is paying for the holder instead of the metal. Slabbing is nice and effective for sure, but it seems so inconsistant. Just an opinion.

I have done very well buying raw gold on ebay:

Coin / What I Paid / What I Saw in the Picture / What Arrived / What Happened

    1900 $2.50 / $375.00 / MS Luster & Details / Hairlines / Returned For Full Refund & Seller Paid Return Shipping + Paypal Fees!!
    1900 $5.00 / $195.00 / MS Luster & Details / Very Nice Coin / NGC63 - Kept for my Collection.
    1900 $10.00 / $295.00 / MS Luster & Details / Very Nice Coin / NGC63 - Kept for my Collection.
1900 $20.00 / $675.00 / NTC MS64 (May as well have been raw, right?) / Heavy Bag Marks, Average Strike, I would rate MS61/ Returned, Paid Shipping 2 Ways
    1914-D $2.50 / $185.00 / MS Luster & Details + STRONG STRIKE / Cleaned / Still have - plan on selling sometime soon / Lost Money Here.
    1914-D $10.00 / $515.00 / MS Luster & Details / Very Nice Coin / NGC63 - Kept for my Collection.

To be fair, this was all done about 2 years ago - maybe things have changed.

One good way for you to proceed would be to go to some local coin shows. Most medium and smaller coin shows have at least one dealer who buys and sells bullion-related gold coins (pre-33 US, World gold - sovereigns, 20 Francs - etc.) These dealers (and most others, of course) are very good at spotting counterfeits and should guarantee that their coins are genuine.

Also, if they have a decent inventory, you'll have the opportunity to pick out the nicer coins and avoid the dipped and "cleaned" ones.

By buying slabbed coins, you know they're genuine and (most likely) haven't been cleaned, but the grading services do slab dipped gold.

I just left a shop today and he had just bought a collection. 1875-s Ngc 55 $20 lib. ---he said he'd take spot(it is a tad bit overgraded---like 2 grades!!!). That type of coin justs sits in a dealers case.

He told me --he'd probably just melt it if nobody buys it in a week.

You need to visit shops and look and you'd be amazed at some of the good coins out there that somebody will buy and mark 20% on ebay.
The type of coin you are looking for is all around but not on ebay.
    Have a nice day

    Don't buy raw gold.
    All glory is fleeting.
  • I have purchased RAW gold from my local coin shop and sold them back to him. Never had any luck trying to move them on EBay. But I usually broke even when selling them back.

Wrong question. Most all counterfeits you see will also be real gold as well.
