1- there is a good possibility the buyers will not open the boxes...its there....

2- if they do open the boxes they get crap and the market for psa 7 or up cards is not "killed"

3- they open the boxes and flood the market with high end 9's....well...all those high end collectors are satisfied and maybe they stop bidding on 7's and 8's....YOU GET YOUR CARDS CHEAPER...

See i have 1000's of dollars in cards, but its not invested though....its my hobby and my hobby costs me money....If things go cheaper I will just buy more....it would suck if my aaron rookie were to drop to 200 bucks after paying 1200...but still....nothing i can do about that and it was the risk of holding on to the card, or stock, for the sake of owning it. Oh well, my 2 cents.

<< <i>I have no idea what all he has, but if the collection is as big as it appears to be I'd be very nervous if I was sitting on a bunch of high graded 60's-70's cards right now.

Incidentally, this really highlights the problem (IMO) with post-1960 graded sets. Every year the pop reports continue to outrun the demand. Where will it end? In addition to this warehouse of cards there are God knows how many shoeboxes still out there. True, most are in rough condition, but it would only take, say, 15 more PSA 9 1967 Hank Aarons or something like that to really screw up the value. >>

I disagree 100% If the cards are out there, BRING THEM ON! The more collectors who can enjoy the better. I know I have said this before, but here it is brought up again. If anybody is getting nervous about their volatile collections simply because some real cool cards might hit the market and drive pops up and up then they more then likely spent above their means and shame on them.

Ya know, there are vintage guys who complain about todays modern card market which create artificial rarities in cards by numbering them. Well, guys, if those freaking vintage cards are out there then they are just plain and simply are out there. Thus, wouldn't that make todays March 28,2006"value" and populations artificial? Would you rather these cards get destroyed to preserve the pops ??? At least you have yours right image

    lothar,
i was thinking the same way (although not using the frog comparison!)

he obviously has heirs to the kingdom. how many companies big or small get run the same way once the founder dies? very few. you could have a situation where he has several kids, some want to keep some want to sell, no one has the coin to buy the other ones out, so the cards get sold. or it could be where the kid wants to get rich quick and has no desire to live the same kind of life the father ran.

i have never dealt with larry fritsch. the only thing i ever heard and this was from a reputable dealer 15 years ago was that he was sitting on a boatload of 1972 high number football cards which he slowly spoon feeds into the market. nothing i have read about him makes me disbelieve that story.

i for one wish that every nice old card in wax, vending, cello or in a sock drawer was graded so we could get a better idea of the pops. once all of the nice raw has dried up we can finally get a clearer picture of what the market value of cards are.

I for one would LOVE IT if the market was flooded with cards that are legitimately on the face of this earth. Not to drive prices down and pops up, not to pi$$ off the guys who spent big bucks on their low pop PSA 9, but to marvel at such treasures ..... which IMO would draw more people into the market.

And there are many out there who would very much abhor the thought of all vintage packs, boxes, etc. disappearing forever. All you need is one opportunistic dealer like Mr. Mint to find a slew of 1948 Leaf boxes that all got trashed basically right away - and today there are fewer than a dozen unopened packs or so remaining, which is why single packs of the baseball, when they come up, go for nearly five figures.

You are certainly entitled to your opinion - but please realize there is an entire collecting community out there who would vociferously disagree with your position.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

Marc - I agree with your post above 100%. There is something to be said for preserving vintage wax and vending. Those items are incredibly unique and their rarity will continue to grow as greed causes more and more of them to be opened.

It is hard for me to understand the lure of opening vintage packs and boxes, other than the pure rush that it probably provides that lasts all of a few minutes or seconds.

    Stay classy,

I agree mostly. What I will do when the time comes is buy two vending boxes and open one. But what happens if the one I open is lousy or great?? Then what do you do with the other one?????? chaz

  • Any estimates as to how much of it will be opened up vs just stored away?

I'd pay money to see them opened up.
  • Depends what I would win. I might crack one or two just for fun! image
