::REVEALED:: Here's an 1892-S Morgan that was found wanting with NGC. Guess the Grade!

Ok, NGC got a hold of this 1892-S Morgan and quickly shuffled it over to NCS. Can you tell why? NCS graded it and noted the issues. Can you? What is so terribly wrong with this key date Morgan that kept NGC from wrapping their plastic around it?

Looks like something has been removed around the date, stars and motto, maybe. image

It's an Accented Hair Morgan! image Looks like tooling on Miss Liberty's hair and the eagle's breast, maybe also on the top of the (viewer's) left wing.

(Hint: tooling? That's not the word NCS used on the insert. . .) image

It's a 1921 with the date digits moved around. image

edit to add: The eagle's breastfeathers look like they've been re-carved and so does Liberty's hair.

  • Loks like re-engraving over the entire hair area... look at the back of the head and how smooth it is and compare it to the hair.......

Pat, if that is a die chip on eagles right wing (our left) then you have one of the most valuable VAMS out there. The last one that I know of sold for 33k+.image

    BAM!!

    You guys are GOOD!

The workmanship on this one is outstanding. Although not to a point of deception, the beauty, even close up, is terrific and the attention to detail pretty amazing.

The hair and complete eagle is engraved and then the coin lightly polished/burnished to blend in the carving.

Kind of a shame as the host coin was a high circulated grade to begin with.

Is the hair over the ear tooled? I haven't looked yet.

  • Excellent carving skills

  • Pat, did you really not notice the tooling? image

No, I noticed the engraving. In fact it's why I purchased this one. I collect engraved coins and this one fits the bill. image

The hair over the ear really does look like it was tooled. If you look at it, it becomes pretty obvious.

So, knowing it was engraved, why did you send it to NGC? Just testing them to see if they would notice?

No- that's the story I was told. I purchased it already holdered. I was fortunute to have the original submitter (not a board member) write me and give me the details of the coin.
