Did NGC overgrade most of the Reiver coins ?

I won about 15 coins from Heritage and think that 12 were overgraded. A lot a MS61-63 large cents with rubs. If I submitted them they would come back in bodybags but most of these seem to be more like AU's

Seems like NGC overgrades most everything. Just my opinion.

I agree, I don't know how they grade copper but in my half eagles most that I have seen was over graded.

  • I feel NGC is grading very conservatively on submissions these days. However, the Reiver coins were the loosest graded group of coins I have ever seen in my life. I don't know what kind of stuff was being pumped through the ventilation system at NGC that day(s), but I'd sure like to get me some.

This may be why sellers can not get back what they paid for them on Ebay.

It's got less to do with the stuff being pumped into the room and more to do with who did the submitting and the size of the order.

NGC and PCGS both slab large cents with rub up to MS63.

This lovely 1829 N-1, ex-Rasmussen, is currently in a PCGS MS63 holder but was slabbed the same grade by NGC last year. The coin grades EAC 55. image

The fact that Heritage has an ownership interest in NGC didn't hurt, either.

Not only did NGC overgrade many of the Reiver coins, the fact that NGC graded many is alarming (NCS holders were used for a fair number of coins, but that number could have been much higher)

It would be hard for me to believe that the NGC graders could not figure out when they were grading Reiver Bust coins. There were so many rare varieties that it should have been a given they had Reiver coins.

I believe the NGC graders were generally more generous in encapsulating, and in grading, the Reiver Busties than they usually are for the Bust series.

In answer to the thread question, of course NGC overgraded most of the Reiver coins. This time they overgraded a little more than usual.

rays - The EAC grade is spot on with that coin - and usually I think the EAC grades are a little wacky. Not in this case, and in fact I'd even go a little lower than 55 as the rub on this coin not only is obviously present, it actually is distracting and I'd market grade it lower. The coin overall is nice though.

koynekwest - I submit both to PCGS and to NGC and it has been my experience that both TPG's grade pretty close to each other. I would say however that NGC does, in my opinion, tend to give a wink and a nod to certain large and/or noteworthy submissions, but their serial numbering system makes it fairly obvious when you're holding a bulk submission coin, even if it's the first in the batch (just punch in a larger number into the cert verification and see if it exists).

I think that all the major grading services overgrade a lot of the coins in the major collections in order to get them to grade. JMHO---Bob

They pushwd a lot of AU material up to MS-60, 61 and 62.

I won two bust halves, one Over graded and did not cross and (1)

accurately graded as AU-58 that crossed with no problem.

    Bear,

    Which Reiver CBH crossed successfully?
