"holed" bust halves

I have been looking at some bust half dollars for my 7070 and have came across a few realy nice ones with EF details but have been "holed" (a small hole drilled near the rim). What does this do to the value? I see many old type coins like this. How much would a hole discount an EF bust half?

Here is an example:

That coin has a lot more problems besides being holed.

I was just using it as an example. It was the first one on ebay that came up with a hole in it.

I pay about $30 (+/-) for VF-EF holed bust halves. The sell for $35 (+/- depending on "the look").

A holed coin looks like a POS in a 7070, unless you are putting together a holed type set as some collectors choose to do.

The hole in that Bustie is not even in the correct location for hanging. I wouldn't want the darn thing for $10, now maybe an early date...image
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

I don't know how long you have been collecting. If you decide you really want to collect holed coins, go for it. If you are somewhat new to the hobby, I suspect that in time, you will regret having bought problem coins.
    I collect circulated U.S. silver
  • It seems like a few years ago, you could pick up a holed type coin (or one with other major damage) for next to nothing. It is harder to do now. I picked up a few holed coins - and coins with initials scratched on them - several years ago. Given my budget - I'd take a holed coin with detail over a problem free G/VG any day. I find them interesting. And just like those who debate MS grades, how nice of a job the hole maker did in his or her distructive deed certainly makes some holes better than others.

For years, I wore an XF half dime around my neck on a silver chain (until it got snatched off of my neck just walking down the streets of London).
