Hypothetical: If a seller does not want to combine shipping...

...is it fair to ask them to ship each and every lot seperately?
Say if a seller wanted $8 to ship each $50 Morgan, and you buy 4 lots or 4 coins, is it fair since the seller doesn't want to combine shipping charges, the seller shouldn't be able to ship the coins together?
What do you say?

If they then thought they'd mail all of them to me, I'd simply pay for each one separately a few days apart.
That's a great idea! I once had a seller that refused to combine shipping charges on three bullion items, but of course, shipped them together.
"fair" and what should or could be done will return very different responses.
The bottom line is this: The auction lists S&H and sometimes makes mention of combined shipping. You know this in advance. If bidding on multiple items from the same seller and there is no mention of combined shipping or you have concerns, ask your questions before you bid otherwise the only responsibilty as concerns shipping for the seller is that you actually receive the merchandise. How it was shipped to you, combined or not, is not necessarily a concern (we are not talking damaged here or any other concocted scenario).
In fact, if the posters to previous threads can be believed, most adjust their high bid based on S&H charges so the $ amount of S&H should not be of consequence.
You can also however request that the seller ship each auction to you separately, but even if he sent them combined, he has still met his auction obligations if you actually receive the merchandise.

First, it would be pretty crappy of the seller not to combine shipping, but if they did refuse it would be the last time I bought from them and I would state the reason in the feedback.
Second, I like the idea of the different addresses for each lot, or if you thought all four lots were in the same package (is there a return policy on the auction) and there was a return policy, refuse the package that way you don't have to pay for the return postage. Before I told the PO that I wouldn't eccept the package, I would note what the actual postage was, if it was under $32 I would want the balance credited back to me along with the auction value.

Ask questions BEFORE bidding.
Work out the minutia before you hit that bid button ! (or don't bid!!!)
If a seller wouldn't combine shipping ... um I would pour honey down his pants and take him to a bee farm. After that, if he still had a stinger, I'd douse him with beef gravy and parade him around some hyenas...
oh wait... hypotheticals get me dreamin' up all sorts of painful recommendations.
The reason is, if you ship one coin you can ship it First Class. When you start adding weight, like four coins you need to go Priority or Parcel Post. If you go Priority there isn't much savings.
If I ship a 10 oz package from 85048 to 20121 it cost $2.55 first class.
If I ship a 20 oz package from 85048 to 20121 it cost $6.05 for priority, no first class available.
It would actually be CHEAPER for me to send two packages than one. Go figure .
