1944-D Mercury Dime -- Error?

Hi, Everyone.

I was just examining the dime that I received today from an auction. It's a 1944-D. When I took a closer look, it looks like there's some sort of error with the mintmark. Can anyone tell me what's going on with the D here?:

Any information I could get would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Brian

Could be a RPM, with the horizontal line across the inside of the D being the top of another D.

That looks to be RPM #3 D/D Southeast Cone E-01 as pictured in the RPM Book.

The slab wasn't marked as an error coin. Do you have to specifically note that on your submission, or do you think that PCGS just missed it? Or is it so minor that PCGS wouldn't care?

Nice little error. Not much of a concern. May have been slabbed prior to this late craze of finding the slightest Mint imperfections. If you check out the history of the Red Book for instance you'll notice very few error coins ever mentioned until lately when eveyone is jumping on the bandwagon and writting books about error coins. Soon there will be more books on coins than coins themselves. Sort of like all those millionaire programs on TV where the announcer makes more on telling you what to do than doing it himself. I used to go to coin shows and see only coins and now there are tables full of coin books.

  • Hi, Carl.

So from what you're saying, it's a minor error, correct, and thus not worth a premium, and not worth having reslabbed as an error coin? I've been Googling "RPM #3 Southeast Cone" ever since I read Ken's post, but I haven't found anything.

You will find this on page 170 in this book. Carl is completely correct in saying that a RPM is not a error in the true sense that a coin would be classified as a error. Error coins are things like double die coins, off center coins, clipped plancets and the like. Repunced mint marks are human made and not mint made mistakes which happen during the production of the coin.

It's a cool little oddity, nonetheless. image That info saves me the cost of trying to get it reslabbed.
