I agree with David in that ANACS is tighter than before but not as tight as the other two major grading companies' standards.

I think that depends upon what they are grading - some unusual items that I sent them downgraded from PCGS 1st generation grades.

My two cents, I do not think anyone will agree with me. That is OK.

PCGS and NGC have been around for 20 years. They have been grading and slabbing coins. There is a huge volume of "graded Coins" out there in the world, so when the words "Tighter" or "Looser" come out they to me are meaningless if your compare ANAcs to the top two TPG services. What makes NGC and PCGS the top? Great question. Best answer is consistant conservative grading over a long period of time with buy/sell and auction results to back it up.

    OK so what.

ANAcs has been doing this longer still, but ANAcs has changed hands and leadership over time. The point of all this is that is does not matter anymore in my opinion when it comes to comparing any TPG service to the top two TPG services.

Anacs appears to be going after a last ditch effort to be in the market as a top tier TPG service, but I think and it is my opinion based on no facts that it is too late. How does one change a market? will a new look and "conservative" grading fool us? This remains to be seen. Ask your self a question, do you want a PCGS MS64 B 1955 DD Lincoln or a ANAcs?

Perhaps it is not about grading anymore but market share of a service that is very profitable. If that is the real reason, then ANAcs is #1 with their new look and new standard. Why? because profits will rise for the company and what happens after the graded coin leaves their hands DOES NOT MATTER!

I sent 10 lincolns to be reholdered. I wrote down the old ANACS grades. I'll post both old and new grades when I get them back.

I think that's completely a myth- There have been countless threads around here discussing experienced collectors and dealers observations of shifting standards over time- or even of individual coins that get graded several times in a row, and come back with differing grades each time.
My style is impetuous, my defense is impregnable !

Just one important example: one of the 1794 dollars in the ANR December Baltimore Sale was ANACS VF Details. It is now ANACS EF Details, in the current Heritage ANA Atlanta Sale.

It was the couple of people who started PCGS and NGC. Aren't there 2 main players that were involved with both companies at the beginning?

It helps if you back up a statement like that with real world data, not just opinion...

I submitted a group of 20 original VAM discovery coins to anacs during FUN on January 5th with specific instructions to hold the coins until the new slabs were ready. The coins arrived here on March 9th.

First I would like to say that I could not be happier with the design, style, shape & feel of their new slabs. The large font used on the grade is perhaps a bit too large for some, but has already grown on me. I have noticed that the black ink is easily smeared when they handle the label too soon after printing, especially on the barcode area.

Of major concern to me is the process used to seal the slabs. I intentionally dropped one of them onto my tile floor at a height of 3 feet while the slab was in a small ziplock plastic bag. The slab split open at the seam. The coin & label can now be easily removed with no actual evidence of tampering. Sorry anacs, but this is a HUGE problem.

8 of the 20 coins that I had submitted were cracked out of NGC plastic and submitted to anacs raw. Every coin came back at the exact same grade.

    1884-O NGC - anacs MS64
    1888-P NGC - anacs MS64
    1898-O NGC - anacs MS64
    1899-O NGC - anacs MS64
    1902-O NGC - anacs MS63
    1903-P NGC - anacs MS63
    1923-P NGC - anacs MS63
    1923-P NGC - anacs MS63

All in all I'm pleased with the new slabs, but the problems I've identified above should have been corrected in the R&D phase, not after the release.
