Sun Times Show

Can anyone give me a general idea of the quality of the Sun Times shows? There's one this weekend in Rosemont (?), and I'm thinking of driving down and checking it out, but I don't want to go if it's usually a bust.

Thanks!
Guy

I go to most of the shows in Rosemont - Nice to look at many things, but no bargains. Some good high end stuff though. Not alot of PSA graded commons (for the registry sets) at the last couple (I was looking for 1954 & 1962 Topps). I think you can do a little better by talking with the friendlier dealers than just table browsing. Many dealers selling raw for PSA SMR (and everybody thinks that their stuff is nm/mt).

I'd give it about a 7 on a 10 point scale. Beats going shopping with the wife! I'll probably go Friday and Sunday and skip the crowds on Saturday.

Of course it depends on what you are looking for.
Always some odd-ball stuff, but in general a fine selection of sportscards from 1975 and earlier. A few newer also.

Great chance to see in person some real classic cards; T-206, Hassan Triple folder. Craker Jack, 52 Topps, Etc., even if not interested in purchasing or collecting, but some awesome displays.
707 Sportscards usually has several booths and offers almost evey Mantle card in almost every grade. Mr. Mint is typically an exhibitor and is quite "unique" if you start a conversation.

If you've never been to a 'Big' show it will be impressive.

I always go to both Sun Times shows (November and March) and am generally very pleased. The quality of autograph guests vary between shows but many of the big dealers are there with their impressive collections. I agree w/ Bosox's comments that there aren't many dealers selling PSA graded commons - but there are deals to be found if you look hard enough.

It's also a great opportunity to meet dealers and submit any PSA orders - which I typically do to save on shipping costs.

I'll be stopping in to drop of a submission of mechanical errors. I save them all up to submit in person to save on shipping. In general, I use these shows to do mostly window shopping to see if a particular set gets my attention for a future project.

  • I have actually had pretty good luck in finding decent raw cards in the 1950's and 1960's. It's always a good time to go down there (or up, depending on where you live). There are a few dealers who show up there with plenty of raw commons to help complete sets. As always, if you don't see something at a table, there's a good cjance they might have behind them. I'll be there on Sunday to hunt around and for Musial.

    Cheers! Wick

Are there any good shows coming up in Florida? I see the same 'ol small time shows listed in various publications here in Florida. I was wondering if anyone had heard any grumblings or anything about something in Florida in the near future. Maybe in Orlando?
