Don't know if I should have kicked myself in the butt for stalling on this.

2004 Platinum Proof Sets From Italy

I saw this yesterday on ebay in the afternoon. I was skeptical because he wanted a bank trasnfer and I was suspicious.
I sent him an email asking if he would accept paypal.
His response was
The Office Italian Taxes check the personal earnings on PAYPAL- I could accept, but only if you pay like quasi-cash or service.
Does Paypal cover(insure) the transfer if it is done this way? I never did this.
Anyway its a moot point. All six sets were purchased.
Any opinions?
If its too good to be true.....

These sets are selling for $8000. multiply by six- that's $36,000 in profit.

    I look at it as a "better safe than sorry" deal. Unless you have friends in Italy who can "reach out and touch someone" then you did the right thing.

    It was probably legit, but there was enough of a chance of something going wrong that I would have passed as well:

    * Foreign transaction
    * No paypal
    * Private auction

    While I have no reason to doubt this seller based on their feedback, those are enough warning signs for me to stay away when more than $2,000 is on the line. Could also be a hijacking.

    As a side note, he was selling other platinum proof sets but they were all the same photo. I even think the photo of the 2004 Platinum Proof Set was really one of a 2005 set. This was another thing that made me suspicious.

    As I look into it more, it smells more and more like a hijacked account.

    You currently have the mind-set of someone who will one day be burned big time regardless of whether the above was for "real".

    Hopefully you will not take this as an insult. image

    I highly recommend wiring money out of the country. You've got a profit of $36k all lined up. What do you have to lose? image

  • I don't think purchasing is a good idea... if you look now he has a crapload of platinum and gold sets for sale cheap. Probably a highjacked account like previously mentioned or this guy is nuts.. whichever I would save your $$$...

    I would not have hit the BIN even if it was $100.00 each.

    You would've been kicking yourself in the butt if you sent the money, way too many red flags for me, one must be very careful with too good to be true coin bargains on the internet, they rarely exist image

    I agree about not sending the money. Just too good to be true. To clarify, I would never do a bank transfer. I never heard of an ebay hijacked account? How is this done?
  • <<<Ebay highjacked account; how is this done ? >>> Fraudulent seller steals the images of coins from active or closed auctions, from ebay/yahoo/heritage ect.. I won off ebay a anacs 1882p $1. ms65, I sent the $125. and the very same night the same coin was running on Yahoo by a legitimate seller; Ebay refunds up to $175 tops when your defrauded image Best way to go is paypal only auctions image

  • Especially when the seller feedback history is 100% music items. The odds this music buff in Italy has come upon a bunch of proof sets of american bullion coins is pretty low. Makes a fella wonder how much coin you could raise in a short amount of time defrauding the world with such auctions.
