Submitting my first coins to PCGS--Questions

I'm getting ready to submit my first bunch of coins for grading by PCGS. I've read the instructions provided with the Collector Club literature but I still have a few questions.

The instructions don't say anything about putting the coin in a poly bag and then inside the Mylar flip. Do most of you do that or is that now outdated tradition?

The instructions say to complete tape the box all around. Do you use the "shipping boxes" PCGS sells for your submissions? They don't seem very sturdy. How do you pack the box so coins are just roaming around inside?

How many coins can you submit together? Is there a max per box? Or only until invoice is filled up?

Thanks in advance for your help?

Use only the Mylar flip, no polybag. Best flips to use are ET Kointainer Saflips.

For registered mail, all seams must be covered by brown paper packing tape. The entire box doesn't need to be covered. I use my own boxes, and put the coins in SafeTMailers to keep them secure. Bubblewrap will work also.

    As many as you want.

what are you sending for grading??
  • Modern Commemorative Proofs and a 2006 Silver Eagle Proof. I bought all from the mint over the years and am finally getting around to have them graded to complete my Modern Commem. Set Registry.

I wanted to wait until Ben Franklins appeared but not scheduled until 4/30 now from the mint so I'm going with what I have.

Are we taking bets on which will arrive to your house first, the PCGS submissions or the Franklin?

If you have any gold coins or coins obviously valued at over $300 that you may submit in the near future, you may want to save your free submissions for those, as the regular price for gold and $300+ coins is $30 per coin.

The 8 coins you plan to submit can be submitted under the modern category for only $14 per coin.
  • I don't get 8 FREE submissions as I only joined the SILVER level membership. Basically, I get annual access to on-line population reports and ability to self-submit rather than through PCGS dealer for my $49.

    Oh, never mind.

Like the others said, DO NOT use the poly bags -- they may leave an ugly haze on proofs.
