My vote is "yes", and VG. I'd be interested if anyone thinks not.

I've never cherried one of these, but I keep looking!

The split, if that's what it is, on the left end of the 9 would seem to indicate that it is 1917 ddo-1. The thickness of the horizontal on the 7 and the spread to the east on the S of TRUST look right also. I'm looking at my anacs f15. I think you have it. Hope so, that's quite a cherrypick.

Would need to see the reverse. From the obverse, it could be anywhere from 12-20.

Looked again, make that 8-15, depending on the reverse.

  • Here are some reverse photos. What grade would you give to it? Asking price? Also, should I send it to ANACS to be slabbed? Would that help raise the price?

  • This is the only one I could find on EBay:

    EBAY 1917 DDO G4

If this is a G4, mine must be alot higher grade! Is ANACS known for giving pushed grades?!?

You might get f12*, worth maybe $100-200. I would get it slabbed. Who knows about raising the price, but you would likely get more bids, which may result in a higher price. There's a slight risk that the mark on the reverse may get it net graded damaged, hopefully not, but being on the reverse, that might have little impact on the price realized if anacs did that.

  • Which spot? The center one?

  • The center spot is dirt of some sort. Is there any way to get it off without damaging the coin?

I said mark, bottom of the reverse, it's taken a hit, like a gash, but not major. No biggie.

I posted some close-up pics of an example of this coin I picked up recently on another thread earlier today, here's thepicto save you a click:

The three most reliable pick-up points for me are the loop of the 9, the thickness of the top of the 7, and the thickness of the second T in TRUST. Those diagnosticsshould be visible even on a very worn coin, I've picked this coin in AG using those markers.

All that said, looking at your picturesI do think you have yourself a doubled die there. I wouldn't grade it better than G-6 or VG-8, with about a 50% chance of a bodybag for damage at PCGS. Still, that is a rare variety and a terrific cherrypick.

good example of the 17ddo Certainly slab it , that coin is a real sleeper in my opinion they seem uncommon and more expensive each time I see them offered on ebay and on list

Joe, even if a service notes the reverse as "damage" it's unlikely to negatively impact the value. There are numerous examples of net graded damaged coins which have the "damage" somewhere other than where the variety occurs, and often that portion of the coin looks nicer than a straight out non-net graded coin. That reverse will not bother someone looking for a 1917 ddo-1 to add to their collection. Again, way to go!
