The Cost of Brick & Mortar - Simple Case Study

Just thought I would check the going rate of the 1999 Proof Sets. . . Silver, Clad, and Quarter. Had some ideas about maybe putting some profits into keys or gold and have convinced the wife now might be a good time to get rid of a few.

So . . . called several of the local shops. Nice guys, all. They know me and I had mentioned I would not be interested in cash . . . trading for some better coins was super.

Got offers of $272, $288, and $268 on the silvers. $53, $52, and $49 on the Clads, and $49, $47, and $44 on the Quarters.

Then, completely as an afterthought, I looked on eBay. Oh wow. 19 Silver sets had sold within the last 48 hours. Range was $321 to $450 with an average of around $355. You also get to add a touch for S/H & insurance.

By extrapolation . . . the cost of running a brick & mortar shop is about $80 per 1999 Silver Proof Set !!! I think the ebay craze just got another convert.

ebay will pretty much average greysheet on these sets. Somehow, some sellers get way more, wish I knew that secret!

Brick and mortar dealers are a good place to acquire such coins but if you want
to sell then you have to ship them or sell ebay. There are plenty of market mak-
ers for almost all raw moderns and getting 100% to 110% of bid is usually not
difficult. Sometimes there won't be buyers for specific items so patience may be
    necessary.

It will always sell on ebay and many buyers are looking for material they believe
    is choice and/ or original.

But what is the net price after sales and fees?

Those dealers would probably just list them on Ebay themselves. If they want to make 20% profit after deducting fees, that would be the basis for their offers.
