What is a rookie Greg Jefferies (Mets) card worth?

I was at my parents house over the weekend, and my mother said she found some old stuff of mine. One item was a paper bag and it had 3 opened packs of baseball cards, and one card in a hard plastic holder. The one in the holder was a Greg Jefferies card, and it is his rookie card from the Mets. I remember getting this card in a pack of cards that I bought, and one of my friends said it was valuable, so that is why I put it in the holder.

Does anyone know what the approximate value is? It is in great condition (like it was when it came out of the pack). I'm really curious, but I don't know where to look (I am a coin collector).

Thanks!!

Since you didn't mention what set it is from, my guess is you are talking about his Donruss rookie. It has a "book" value of 25 cents, so it probably sells in the nickel to dime range. Probably the same neighborhood in price for his other rookie cards like Score and Fleer.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

Not worth anything unless you go back in time and sell it when it came out. He was a huge prospect who hit well when he was first called up and he became a decent player, nothing more.

  • I lived on Long Island during the Jefferies craze. I remember them touting him as ROY after only 13 games. Card shops were selling his rookie for $10 bucks each. Oh, those were the days...
Next MONTH? So he's saying that if he wins, the best-case scenario is that he'll be paying for it two weeks after the auction ends?

Forget blocking him; find out where he lives and go punch him in the nuts. --WalterSobchak 9/12/12

Funny you should bring him up. I found an old card album from my child collecting days recently. The second page had 6 Jefferies rookies. I had put it away back around '89 thinking that was my future. Of course, the first page had 6 Andy Benes rookies, so my prospecting skills have never been that sharp I guess.image

Thanks for the info. I remember I bought the pack at a card show and the dealer watched me open it. He said, "wow; that is worth $10!" (I think I paid 50 cents for the pack). So I turned to him and said, wanna buy it? He looked a little surprised, looked at the card, and made some comment that it wasn't perfectly centered. He offerede me $2 if I remember correctly.

Given what is written below, I should have taken it!!

I remember spending every cent I made that summer opening donruss packs trying to get that stupid card. I must have opened 3 boxes (which was serious $ for me at the time)...needless to say, I never pulled any, not one. By the end of the summer, I didn't really even want the card anymore. It was just a matter of principle at that point.

It's worth significantly less than the used paper bag it was stored in image

  • I recently saw a group thats mission is getting G. Jefferies in Hall of Fame. lol seriously. I too remember buying his cards as a kid along with all those John Oleruds,Ben McDonalds and Eric Anthony. Live and learn. Its funny as I have stacks of those worthless cards now but didnt collect the FF card then and that is all I do now-look for all versions. Guess I should of not listened to Beckett so much as there a 3X more versions than they list for Bill Ripken versions and those Eric Anthonys didnt pan out like they said they would.

I think you might have to pay someone to take it although I think he was a decent player but not what his hoopla dictated the type of player he was going to be.Lets say he was a utility man plus at best.

  • Greg had a good career certainly better then most of the above comments would have you believe. he just never achieved the level of stardom that was projected of him.Jefferies career statsimage:
