has a couple circ gold pieces, a cuppla circ silver dollars........ and then he asks if I "do" any currency......... I say "Lemme see what ya got".......... And he whips out THESE !!!!!!!!!
The Large National is nice, but nothing incredibly rare........ Check out the serial #s on the small notes !!!!!!!!!

BTW, This is NOT a "done deal"....... Not having a ton of experience in currency, the walk-in left the notes with me so I coould make a few calls and make him a better informed offer...........

Very cool! Consecutive and the first two. That's too much. Certainly one of the benefits of having a brick and mortar shop. Hopefully it helps offset the long hours.

As a currency collector, I would LOVE to have those notes!!!

The two small size notes are the first two notes (position A) from two consecutive sheets. There are 6 notes on a sheet, so there are six notes with serial number 1. The large size note is from the fifth sheet, second note on a four subject sheet.

You probably need to get a hold of a copy of the National Bank Notes book
by Don Kelly. Census data is provided on surviving notes.

Is the potential seller related to Walter Riley? His signature is on all three notes. It would seem fitting that signatories (bank president in this case?)would get dibs on low numbered notes when issued. Also, would the other four notes on the small-sized 6-up sheet necessarily have been $5 notes, or would they have been $10s and $20s? I seem to remember seeing that the denominations were sometimes mixed on these, meaning there might not be any more S/N 1 small sized from this bank.

On small size notes the denomination was the same for the entire sheet.

Serial numbers on the first sheet would be A000001A to F000001A, with serial numbers on the second being A000002A to F000002A.

Sure is a small world. I would also would like to know where and who gave those to you? I live 45 miles from that bank, which closed it's doors 15 years ago. I think? The Riley's retired very wealthy and are a fine family. Nice fun find..... Curious here in Indiana.

I remember going to a coin store in LA when I lived there in from '95 to '99, the shop owner was bragging to a friend how the son of a local prominent currency collector was bringing in his late father's collection a few notes every week. The owner was happy because he was getting very good stuff and the kids was happy he was getting money every week.

I know very little about currency collecting....

I grew up in East Chicago, Indiana. That's Walter J. Riley's signature alright.

Mr. Riley had two banks in town, one in the Indiana Harbor section and one in East Chicago. The one on the East Chicago side was robbed by John Dillinger in 1934. Sadly, they just tore it down a few months ago to build a Walgreens.

Riley probably owned...........and sold.........most of the property in the city.

He was, in spite of his stature, a very fair and non-assuming person. Well liked by all.

The 2 Fr.1800-1 notes are absolutely incredible. I assume that they are CU, being consecutive. Is that true?

I am not a currency expert, but I am guessing that the 2 $5 notes are worth $3,000 to $5,000 range for the pair.

Also, it looks like your large size is a plain back. Is that correct?

This bank (1st Nat. of E C, IN) was in business until about 12 years ago when they became
a part of National City Bank. Walter Riley left a long legacy of numismatic and exonumismatic
items behind including a short series of medals and related items. It was the downtown
branch which supplied by '82 and '83 coins. This bank probably released the lion's share of
the 1979 type "d" reverse quarters.

If memory serves he died in the late '60's at a ripe old age. He was also associated with the
knights of Malta in some way. This has been a prodigious coin issuing authority for some time.
So far as I know he was never a coin collector.

On a side note. My direct relation owned 80 acres in what is now the south loop in Chicago in the 1830's.. Too bad they moved to Kansas in the 1870's

So, I do coins and hence, currency is an unknown to me. If I had them I'd put them on ebay starting at face value with no reserve... and a side note that if they don't bid early, my daughter might snatch them up for lunch and gas money
