For those that have the Heritage Atlanta catalogue...

did you see the ratty looking 1944 Steel cent? Too bad on the rust, how bad will it hurt the final price?

    You mean this one...

    Ratty 1944 steelie

The current bid is only $33, sounds like a steal for that price...

    I doubt it'll do over $25k.

What do you mean rust? According to the catalog, it's "russet verdigris". image

image I guess "russet verdigris" is what is left behind after NCS removes the active rust. My guess is the coin closes around $10k with the juice.

Russet verdigris is the greatest term ever for rust.

It's become anticlimactic to get a Heritage catalog these days - watched the auction build for months and have already reviewed it on-line.

    ver·di·gris
    n.
A green patina or crust of copper sulfate or copper chloride formed on copper, brass, and bronze exposed to air or seawater for long periods of time.

    rus·set
    adj.
    Moderate to strong brown.

OK, so russet verdigris means moderate to strong brown green patina on copper, brass or bronze. I can see the connection to rusty steel...
