How many KEY DATE PCGS inserts do you have in your possesion?

SEND THEM IN...HUH?

The POP reports are starting to become crapola and that's a shame. They had the potential of being the ONLY objective tool in the coin universe.

Seriously...I wish the crack-out guys who we know have thousands of them would just send them in. THOUSANDS...think about that...KEY DATES...in KEY GRADES.

All of mine are in holders.
    When in doubt, don't.

No matter how hard you try, those 'key date' Saints just aren't gonna get any less common... image

Now I'm dead serious this time, Bruce. This isn't just about Saints...it's about any series where the prices see severe jumps from one grade to another.

But let me just point out some Saints. I see the mintmarked 1924/25/26-D&S in MS64 and they have all doubled and tripled in 3-4 years! Why? Because they are worth 4 times more as 65's! Why not crack out a $12-25K coin 30 times if it can go MS65 and be worth $75-100K?

I see 16 1931-D MS65's!! There have been 2 for sale in the last 10 years in Heritage sales. I would bet there are no more than 6-8 coins.

This is a "tool" that could become rather useless unless people start cooperating. Look at what was sent in by Contorsi...13,000 inserts??

You are correct - but it only matters to you if you let it bother you. We serious collectors know which dates are messed up. JD is working on the pop reports to get things fixed.... hopefully he'll have a positive effect.

Bruce, as advanced collectors we can use Heritage archives as well as experience to "know" what coins are really off.

When it takes 4 years to find a specific coin that shows a POP of 25 common sense says that there ain't 25! image

  • I only have a couple of dozen. I'll send them in when I save up enough for postage...

I will never understand why collectors insist on holding on to empty slabs. Sending cracked slabs back to TPG's only LOWERS the pop of their coin (granted it's only 1 fewer)...but every little coin in the pop counts...particularly if it's less than 100 or so. I have never cracked a coin out but you can bet if I did I'd surely send it in or, at the very least, give it to PCGS at a show. I'll bet if PCGS put something out in their annual membership packets that offers to PAY FOR ALL SHIPPING OF THESE HOLDERS...OR THAT THEY ARE WILLING TO ACCEPT THESE EMPTY SLABS AT MAJOR SHOWS...they might get more sent in. But then again, why should PCGS pay for the shipping on something that we as collectors cracked out?

Can anyone name ONE benefit of keeping an empty slab in your possession? I sure cannot think of one.

  • One benefit is skewing the data and possible manipulating of price in your favor. If you focus in a specific area and you play the game your information is more valuable than PCGSs. Take the inserts returned by Contursi. If you collected 1907 High relief double eagles the pops were off. When Contursi submitted his 13,535 inserts highlights included:

42 certified 1879 and 1880 $4 "Stella" pattern gold pieces with a combined estimated value of over $5 million
130 round and octagonal 1915 Panama-Pacific International Exposition $50 gold commemoratives valued at over $5 million
168 High Relief 1907 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagles valued at over $3 million.

Just think of the other 13,195 inserts, I'm sure they were not state quarters!!! image

Knowing a guy like this has that kind of "extra" information can make him a valuable resource. When you are the only one (or a select few) that has a true sense of the actual data it can be pretty powerful. I'm not saying Contursi did anything wrong, just that he had alot of information that others were not privy to giving him a edge. As TDN said "We serious collectors know which dates are messed up"image

Guess what? For some reason beyond me, the High Reliefs barely dropped with all those 168 inserts! Now that is a mystery to me!image

If Contorsi had sent in 100 inserts at a time just think of all the postage he saved over 13,000 + inserts NOT being sent in. I believe that if you have that many inserts of one coin and then buy that particular coin at a low buy price then send in all of your inserts, that it would then raise the value of your coin since the pops would fall. Does this make sense?

What Stooge said makes perfect sense. As we all specialists know in our little niche, or not so little for some, the numbers are off-WAY off in many cases! For example, how many 1964 MS 68 Kennedys are there? How many 1982-D MS 68 Kennedys exist? I don't think ANY exist in BOTH examples. How about the 1967 Kennedy fiasco that was in a certain member's set? It WAS listed as a CAMEO, yet, it was registered as a coin in an MS set? When PCGS corrects that goof, will they reduce the POPs on that coin too? I can't supply you with many examples, but here's a couple for instance. I can/will only address Kennedy half dollars:

How many 1990-D's in MS 66 or 67 are there? According to the PCGS POPs, there are 110 in MS 66 and 10 in MS 67. I know from my experience there are less MS 66's. I have submitted a single coin 4 times for an upgrade. I have been looking for one and couldn't find one in my price range years ago. I broke one out that is at LEAST as good as any of my MS 67's, yet it's in a 66 slab. It's been over a year since my last try, but one of these days, it WILL be in a 67 holder! The price is $60 in MS 66 and $1000 in MS 67! I passed them up at $400 the last time I was offered one for sale years ago. That was over book back them by quite a bit.

How many 1997-Ds are there in MS 67? NOPE! PCGS states there are 46 in MS 67 and 3 in 68. Again, I have submitted mine twice after cracking it out. The price for a 67 is $300 for 67 and $1500 for a 68-last one sold for that a little over a year ago. How often do you see an MS 67 come up for sale? Should be pretty ofetn since it's ONLY a POP 46 coin. It sold twice last year on Teletrade.

I have many other examples in the Kennedy series in both MS and proof from myself and others. I also know of a few people back home that play the crackout game with Barbers in all 3 series, Washingtons(early years) and Frankies. They crack out many hundred every year. That's just between a few collectors I know. These are just figures of PCGS coins. I have never cracked out a coin from any other TPG holder. I have bought a few NGC holdered coins to crack out, but, will be waiting for some time before I do that. The only other holdered coins besides PCGS and NGC are the couple I bought from Pat, a couple AT Ike's that were pretty/cheap. I asked the others to send back the inserts and they said they wouldn't do it because they liked the true POPs lower so they buy them cheaper. I only have about 20 so I will wait before I submit them.

I wonder how many Russ and Marty have cracked/sent for cross overs? That's a different story too. Would/should PCGS report the numbers to NGC and vice versa? If they did, the true numbers would be more accurate, but, if they did that, then the prices would be higher, resulting in higher prices to them for grading guarantee work, correct? Just my fifty cents. Ray

The problem get worse when you take into consideration NGC and other tpg's..i ran into a coin that i have interest in this past week that the total graded number is nearly double the mintage..How about that?

Just as an off shut on this. Why doesn’t PCGS just give credit on submission fees if the submitter sends in some inserts with a submission?

These 50c checks are crazy. I heard once that it cost a company about $15.00 to issue a check. That is accounting for the man/hours involved and postage/handling.
