80s wax at Walmart?!?!

I was at Walmart today looking around. I usually wander past the card racks just to see what they have, when...

Between the Yu Gi Oh cards..

1989 Upper Deck (high series): $3.49 a pack
1988 Topps Traded sets: $9.99 each
1987 Donruss: $2.98 a pack

the 87 Donruss stuff looked pretty beat up, but the Upper Deck looked clean.

It was totally unexpected to see this sort of stuff laying around. Pretty steep markup though.

It's worth it if you get a Jerome Walton, Todd Zeile, or Jim Abbott.

1989 Donruss? They're still printing that stuff, right? I figured they finished the 1987 print run, oh, at least a few years ago. image

Just for the heck of it, I picked up a 1989 Upper Deck pack. Got a mint Junior Felix rookie. w00t!!!

They're probably trying to cash in on the newbies who will look at the prices of the new packs and just naturally think that the old packs are a steal at those prices.

I don't think the world will ever be free of all the 1988 / 89 cards that were printed.

Yes, this was big news in all the baseball card industry magazines. This is part of the "Cleveland find" in which a hoard of these wax packs were discovered in the closet of a twenty year old college student.

Fellow Eagles fan - You know how there are the 1952 Topps "finds" and other major baseball card "finds" - it was just a joke based on that - I guess not a very good joke - I'll have to do better next time - LOL

I worked with a guy at an auto parts store. He told me when he worked at a retail store (I think Wal-mart) back in '89 he took apart the isle shelf/displays and hid a bunch of '89 ud wax boxes in them. He even had a map he drew up to mark the location. He said he was going to go back and get them but I seriously doubt he ever did. Maybe the store found them before he went back for them and thats where this stuff came from?
