PayPal account spoofed

Someone spoofed my PayPal account tonight and hit me for almost $500. I already called them and got it sorted, but the weird thing is I have never gotten a spoof e-mail or anything. I recently made a couple of purchases from eBay (all long standing members with a good history), but that is it. They arent sure how it happened (she said it was probably someone that got my e-mail and brute forced the password) and werent too free with the info they did have, so spoof mail or not be careful.

How often to you change your password? It might not be a bad idea to do it at least once every couple of years or sooner.
