Wow!

Just got this back from NGC -- it was a pleasant surprise:

The seller had said AU55, and I agree. I never expected it to come back this high -- I was just happy to find one with original surfaces.
On a related note, NGC really needs to work on the quality of its imaging.

I've noticed a fair number of NGC slabs that I've seen lately that seem a bit overgraded. Unfortunately I seem to be seeing more NGC than anything else, especially on coins that catalog less than several hundred dollars. I think that people shy away from PCGS because of the slabbing costs and having to go through a dealer, unless the coin is valuable enough to justify the additional expense. ANACS, while being more consistent than NGC (IMO) has a bad rap; people think that by going NGC the grading will be "better".
It's almost a 55-30-15 breakdown (NGC-PCGS-ANACS) on Darkside material...

PCGS, besides being more expensive, grades most world coins very tightly, so I could see why sellers prefer NGC. I don't trust NGC for Canadian because I think they consistently overgrade by a couple of points compared to the market. PCGS seems closer to what the Canadian market expects (also British).
As for ANACS, I think they are pretty strict and underrated on world coins.

Oops - almost forgot....Nice Coin !!!!
The obverse of this coin is very tricky, people tend to undergrade it because of its design, and full strikes are scarce with large portuguese silver coins (500/1000 reis and 50 cent./1 Esc.) even in common UNC coins (try to get a full hair Carlos I 500 reis coin even from 1891 or 1896...), i've seen a couple of these coins in a slab and it seems to me that the graders pay more attention to circulation signs (contact marks, bumps, nicks...) than detail.

NGC - $16.50 (assuming the modern in question is valued under $300)
ANACS - $16.00 (valued under $500)
PCGS - $14.00 (world modern tier, valued under $300)
