Die Variety Attribution at Coin Shows...

MrEurekaMrEureka Posts: 24,309 ✭✭✭✭✭
I'd like to bring some coins to every show and have a specialist attribute them for me. I just don't have the time to attribute everything myself. I'm thinking the service would cost two bucks a coin with a 24 hour turnaround.

Would you be willing to do this work?

Would you use the service?

I charge $4 plus return postage (free at shows for verbal attributions) Sometimes I don't have my references with me at shows for the later date Indian cent varieties.

PCGS charges $15 to verify a VAM attribution. This requires that YOU attribute the coin first, they only confirm it. If you attribute it wrong, too bad, you still pay the $15.

    $2??? No thank you.

If someone asks me for an attribution (bust half dimes) at a show, I provide it for free. If someone wants an attribution elsewhere, just get the coin to me and it is still free. For me, it is part of the fun of the hobby to share information and expertise. Two dollars does nothing for me (even if repeated a hundred times), but a new contact or fellow collector to share with provides a whole lot of personal satisfaction.

I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
  • Hand me an unc coin and $2 ain't bad. Hand me an AG coin, and $2 can be like digging a ditch for half a day just to get lunch. (not that I miss lunch too often)

I agree image I just won't provide an attribution to a dealer right before I buy the coin image

NGC attributes coins in their holders at shows for $10. Usually Dave Lange at NGC and the ANACS graders will look at your handful of coins here and there at shows for free (no guarantees and usually without their references).

The best thing is to show up to specialist and coin club meetings, like SSDC or NSDR for VAMs for instance. Usually, you will find several very knowledgeable folks who are happy to look at your coins and assess them for nothing. (Just don't bring a shoebox full.) Overnight during a show, someone might look over coins for a fee, no fee, or a chance to buy interesting ones perhaps. I know in the case of Morgan/Peace dollars I and many others probably would be game on that. Hell, we do it on the bourse for hours hoping dealers don't cut us off.

Whenever I see Ed and Lance Hipps, I attribute their half dimes for them. If there is one I need or a scarcer variety, the price is the same. They sell by grade, not by die marriage. Great people for so many reasons other than this simple one.
