I know it's been discussed before but...I bought the Fugio Restrike!!!

Saw this PCGS MS63 restrike on Coin Rarities website at the beginning of the month when Goose3 posted a link to their site and I knew the first time I laid eyes on it that I had to own it. I made arrangements this weekend to acquire the piece and it is in route to me as of today image

Honestly in looking at all of the restrike sales via Heritage over the last 3 or 4 years and I could not find a more eye appealing example with plenty of red left on the coin so I guess you can consider this a toned piece........ I always wanted to own a fugio and even though this isn't an actual federal piece.....it was priced at about a 1/3 of what a non restrike would have run me....and it was within my price range so I went for it. image

If anyone else owns a Fugio or a restrike...please post it here image

When were they restruck? That's a very attractive piece.

Wow Shane, that's a major departure from what you usually buy, but it's wonderful!! Congrats!! image

Yes labeled as a restike so the term has stuck with the coins but the dies were recreated and not copied so the coins are not restrikes in the classic sense. Still I like the history of the piece and it has a truly wonderful look about it that will make it a nice centerpiece for my collection.

A very nice looking example. This piece is not a restrike since original dies were not used. It is actually very similar to today's Gallery Mint copies though it was struck around 1860.

Congratulations Krypto-It's beautiful! I was hoping you'd go for it. I love the series, even bought a restrike myself, 1962 Bashlow's restrike; silver:

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

Shane, I also saw that piece when it was posted on the buy/sell/trade board and thought long and hard about making the purchase myself. I decided though to not do it as it wouldn't really fit my collection and would stick out like a sore thumb. I am really glad to hear you got it, as I consider you one of the board members with tastes the most similar to my own. Congratulations on the supurb purchase!
  • Thanks for not buying it Robert......and like you....this coin does not fit in my my toned coin collection but I bought it anyway. I think we have all heard the sirens song of a particular coin calling to us and for me.......the pull was instant when I saw this coin and really.....that's what collecting is all about.

One of my favorite coins. I went on a quest for one a few years back and got this one. It's in a PCGS AU-50 holder.

Nah, because it isn't modern crap. It's just a counterfeit. image

I like the New Havens better than the fugly originals. Yeah, the originals have history and display the crudeness of early minting processes. But, I just don't think that there is anything nice about huge planchet defects and uneven striking.

    Just my eversohumble opinion.

    Cheers,

    Bob
