GOETZ: K-193 Popes Note Cast Iron Satirical

K-193 Peace Offers of Pope Benedict XV (Papstnote) - (Papal Note)
1917, Blackened Cast Iron, 57.7mm, UNC/Gussfrisch
Obverse: The Allied Powers, President Wilson trying to save his bag of gold, Lloyd George holding on to the mast, Poincare and a Russian; all show mortal fear as their ship begins to sink. Inscription; "Verlorenes Spiel" (Lost Game).
Reverse: Papal Crown and Key; a dove holding olive branch in its beak. Alluding to the Pope's peace offer. Inscription; 15. August 1917.
Goetz based this medal on a note sent by the Pope to all belligerents whereby he suggested disarmament, withdrawal from the occupied territories, restitution to German colonies, settlement of political and territorial questions in a conciliatory spirit, and a general forgiving of the past. Obviously, the outcome of WWI came out much differently than this note suggested.

Another outstanding artwork, thanks for sharing!
<< <i>Does anyone know if there are coins with a Key Or Keys on them? >>
Papal coins and medals often have keys on them, representing the keys of Saint Peter. You can see some on the Vatican 1963 Sede Vacante medals here.
