Do dealers put their coins in another dealer's case to try to sell them easier?

I was at the Baltimore show last week. On a few occasions, I asked if the dealer had any XX coins (because he had similar ones in his case). A few times, the dealer said to me, "I don't have any XX coins here, but if you go to Dealer Y's table and check out Coins 1, 2, and 3, those are mine."

How common is it for one dealer to place his coins in another dealer's case? Does this really help sales? I can maybe understand if one dealer happens to acquire a coin that he normally does not stock (say a colonial), and then asks a colonial dealer to put it in his case and try to sell it. However my situation involved asking one specialist and then getting referred to another specialist's case to see the coin. How common is that? Also, do the dealers share the profits in any way, or do the dealers do it out of courtesy?

Happens alot. One dealer may have a possible sale for a certain coin and borrows it from another dealer to try and sell it - i assume adding a few bucks profit for himself- I have seen this time and time again.

Happens all the time.

I send stuff to shows with dealers, and if the coin hasn't sold, he happens to be at a show I'm at, my coin is in his case.

Not a big deal. If he sells it out of his case to my client, I get my price and the other dealer gets a little something for the deal.

Works out well.
