1955 Poorman's DDO and 1984 Double Ear Questions

I have heard that some people call the "Poorman's Double Die" a legit variety and other's say it's just bogus. Any way, I was going through some Lincolns tonight and came across this one that really caught my eye. Is this some kind of double die (I am really new to die varieties)?

Could this possibly be a 1984 Double Ear or am I imagining things (I know pictures suck, sorry)?

Yes, that is it. Most of the time it can be easily seen by the last 5 in the date. Got a dozen of those, so they aren't rare or scarce.

  • Not rare, but still nice to have.

    Nice coin.

I used to own a '84 Double Die, and the 2nd ear was pretty dramatic. Your '84 looks normal to me - based on the photo, I would not assess it as being the DDO variety.

Your 1955 is a "poorman's double die" but it is NOT any form of a doubled die. It is just a worn die that has been excessively polished and the abrasives cut a shallow image of the five next to it. I is not a die variety or really even an error. Just a worn die that should have been replaced.

Your picture of the 55 is to dark to really guess the grade. But at coin shows a poor mans 55 double die still sells for a fw dollars in a top grade. They are great as as fill in for that spot in a Whitman Album if you don't have the real thing and don't want to blow a fortune on one.

  • is it common to find these in other "P" mint lincolns from the 50s?

i just went through an old bank roll of 1953-p lincolns and found several coins with very doubled 3's in the date. i also have a 57-p that has a doubled 7 in the date.

    thanks

As Condor says on the 1955. The 1984 is not a doubleD die, at least not 1-O-IV.
