AH Kennedy Before/After. What a change!

I don't know if I should MS70 this coin, or send it to NCS. It has some knicks on the reverse, so I was thinking just MS70. Today was another good day, I didn't think I could top yesterdays finds, but today I found 2 AH Kennedy's for cheap at a coin show.

New pictures of the coin. I'd say it turned out pretty well.

The "States of" on the reverse is also frosted, just the camera angle and lighting caused it to look poorly in the image.

I guess it would depend what you want to do with the coins. With the minimum NCS price being $20 per coin, unless you have a coin you really want to slab I would practice with MS70 and patting the coins dry. If the AH was a DCAM there is no way I would take a chance with boogering it up, it would be off to NCS in a heartbeat.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

  • Part of the problem is it has been manhandled like crazy. The whole obverse is cover in prints as well as half the reverse. It has some toning too, but I hope that MS70 removes that.

gamrOn, I have used a 1/10 dilute solution on a 1976 proof quarter and half with great success. I used a pair of locking coin forceps (plastic) and placed the coins in the 1/10 MS70 solution for five minutes. remove the coin, hold it vertically, and blot the bottom edge with a kleenex to remove the excess. Then place the coin in a glass (forcepts still attached) and rinse very well with water (RO water is best) for five minutes. Again blot the bottom edge with a kleenex and put the coin (forcepts still attached) into acetone. Use fresh acetone ($5 at Lowes, Home Depot), outdoors (don't do this indoors - you want your work area well ventillated). Gently swish for 15 seconds, blot the bottom edge of the coin and just let it air dry while holding the coin vertically using forceps. There is no need to blot the coin dry. Forcepts can be purchased online at any number of coin supply places for a couple of bucks.

Try this out on a couple of halves (old crusty, new proof, whatever) so that you get the feel of handling a coin the size of the half with a forceps. Once you're comfortable with the process - decide if you want to treat your AH half. In addition, you might try a bit stronger solution of MS70 (maybe 1/5 diluted in water). And, remember, use fresh stuff.

You're welcome. BTW, check out some of the previous threads regarding acetone. It is not difficult to handle properly, but it does need to be handled with some care - it is flamable (keep it away from all ignition sources). Vapors are bad news for pets and perhaps humans in more than just brief exposure, etc. Acetone is the stuff used in nail polish remover (don't substitute NPR for pure acetone) - so, getting a bit on your fingers, or breathing a bit of vapor is not a problem - just keep it to a minimum. I always use it outdoors. Keep the acetone in a sealed glass container - open it, use it, then seal it up again. To view previous threads type acetone in the search box on the US coin forum main page.

  • Don't waste yer $$ on MS70. Mr Clean is basically the same stuff for about 1% of the cost of MS70.
