GOETZ: K-164 Wooing of the Balkan Kings, 1915

K-164 Der Bittgang am Balkan; (Supplication to the Balkans)

1915, Cast Bronze, 58mm VZ.

Obverse: The English Tommy, President Poincare, Czar of Russia, and the King of Italy kneeling in a suppliant attitude.

Reverse: A fence with sacrificed pieces attached to it; a gold spitting dolphin from England, lemons from Italy, a bleeding heart from France, and a strong fist from Russia. Behind the fence are the portraits of the Balkan Sovereigns; Ferdinand of Rumania, Constantine of Greece, and Ferdinand of Bulgaria. Inscription: "Hilfe! Balkan! Streit fuer uns" (Help! Balkans! Fight for us).

    I just cannot get over how much story Goetz can tell on the round,limited surface of a medal - the detail is amazing and the symbolism is right on!
    I agree with Dorkgirl - this has been a great exposition in a day.
