Why do some sellers Not accept Paypal or Checks

Why do some sellers Not accept Paypal or Checks?

Just venting.... last night I won several auctions, went to pay form them with Paypal and found that two of them did not accept paypal (Yes, I should have read the terms of sale first). Normally that's no big deal, but when I went to print out the invoice so I could send them a check, it says MONEY ORDER or CASHIERS CHECK ONLY! I hate that. Now I have to go to the post office, wait in line, get the money order, pay the extra $1.00 per money order, then mail it off.

The funny thing is, I will not do this for a few days... I would have mailed a check TODAY or used paypal same day auction ended. Just seems like some sellers are driving away the good buyers. I will not buy from these sellers again because of the inconvience.

Thanks for listening, therapy is good.

I get a few bargains this way, since some bidders don't want to deal with the hassle of buying a money order. At least you may have won the auction at a lower price than you would have from someone who accepted paypal or checks.

Some of the bigger drug stores and grocery stores sell money orders, and that's where I usually buy them. They're cheaper there (33 cents at Albertsons, I think), and the lines are usually shorter than those at the P.O.

    Mike,

good points, I did get a pretty fair price on the auctions I won. I will try the Longs near my house, that sounds a lot easier.

I always send a check anyway. The only checks I write are echecks...and either the seller doesn't feel like hassling, or the e-checks look like cashiers checks to that individual. Either way, I've never had a problem.

Some sellers are clearly not very sophisticated because it's far easier to scam someone with a fake money order...figuring most sellers will mail out the item right away without bothering to find out if the money order is legit....and most the time the money order is legit, it has just been unknowingly written against someone's corporate account. By the time the fraud has been detected it's been 6+ months, when the charge reversal finally hits their bank acct.

there was actually a really good scam a few months ago...people would send checks all over for $5-10k. They alleged it was partial payment for a sweepstakes winning. To get the remaining money you would have to pay fees, etc. which were like $2k and they in return they were supposed to send the $50K or whatever it was that was remaining. needless to say, the checks were legit but were being drawn out of unsuspecting businesses' corporate accounts. Since the checks were cashing and it wasn't even the entire amount the check was written for, people had no issues paying the fees to get more money. Unfortunately 6+ months late all those funds began getting reversed and all those fees people paid turned into absolute losses.

Really the mentality people have to get free money is no different whether you're trying to get a mantle rookie for $100 or you play publisher's clearing house. Being the darwinist that I am, I have absolutely no sympathy for suckers.

I have to agree - not accepting PayPal certainly causes me not to bother bidding on auctions. I rarely have time to deal with the money order process, I would much rather pay right away with PayPal (and be protected to a certain extent) - sellers that refuse to pay a few pennies for this convenience are costing themselves in the long run. Either that, or they were thrown off of PayPal for fraud, which is another reason not to buy from a non-PayPal seller.

Most of the time buyers who are exclusive to money orders and cashiers checks will accept cash as well, allowing a much faster and easier option.

I sell on Ebay and I don't accept checks because of bounced check fees, and hassle of trying to get the person to come good on the check PLUS the returned check fee. Plus I have to wait to make sure the check clears before I will ship the item, so it's sitting around my place. As a seller, I like to ship within a couple of days. I do accept Paypal, money orders and cash at the senders risk.

I get all my money orders at Wal Mart, 46 cents.

It may not be the safest, but it has always worked for me.

43/43 so far, after looking at my records.

I accept all forms of payment, including checks, but just for the record, I have done over 8,000 transactions (sales) on eBay and have NEVER had a buyers check bounce, not even once. When I had a shop in the early 1990s, I averaged 1-2 bounced checks a month.

    Just food for thought.
  • I`ll accept any methods of payment. Gimme, gimme, gimme!! LOL Seriously though, I offer whatever option is most comfortable for the buyer. Only thing is, personal checks can take up to 14 days to clear so if a buyer wants a swift transaction, they should not send a personal check. I wait 2 weeks at least before sending something paid by check. PayPal is by far, the best method regardless of fees. When paying by M/O, I buy mine at 7-11(Western Union). $0.50 only.

According to federal law and "new" banking regs, checks no longer take two weeks to clear.....it is supposed to be a 3 or 4 day process now.

When I sell I will accept PP Ck MO or Cash what ever works for the buyer although I prefer PP.I will only buy from sellers that accept PP
as I too have very little time as I am gone 12 to 14 hrs a day between work and driving which doesent leave me a lot of time. There are 2 sellers JHustle1 and Texasholdem who I will send CK or MO to and thats it.

3-4 "business" days, yes, but it takes a bit longer for out of state checks. I`ll still wait the 2 weeks anyway just to get buyers to send another method of payment. It depends on the amount of the check too. If it is a high priced item, I will send it out as soon as the check has cleared. Those $3 checks or less are a pain the arse. I`ll let those buyers wait a bit longer. There really is not much of a problem sending cash through the mail. Especially for $3. It isn`t worth it to buy a M/O for $3. It just eats away at the bargain price imho.

Like moosedog, I've had good luck with taking checks. Of the hundreds of checks I've received in the last few years, only one has bounced, and that person made good. I never wait for checks to clear, either. Besides making everyone wait longer for their cards, my waiting for checks to clear would just make the business harder to manage.

Someday I suppose I'll get burned, but I figure that being overly cautious has its price, too.

I love the sellers that do not take Paypal! I lost a PSA 8 1971 Kaline to a high bid of $138 and bought one yesterday for $62.45 from Seller that does not accept Paypal. The fees are high, but unless you are a MintXpress or Discount Sportscards, you significantly limit your potential buyers!
