My First Ebay Coin Auction As A Seller :)

Hi, Everyone.

I'm putting the 1940-P Mercury dime I won up on the block. (I'm keeping the other one.) Please let me know what you think of this auction listing. If I made some grievous mistakes, I can always revise the listing:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8397474449

I like that Ebay lets you donate to charities through their auctions now. image I hadn't seen that before.
If you haven't noticed, I'm single and miserable and I've got four albums of bitching about it that I would offer as proof.

  • Hello bhartman35,
I think your auction is well done and cudos to your charitable donation. I just noticed that your shipping charges for 2.00 for priority mail is low.
Your actual cost to USPS will be $4.05. Maybe you meant first class mail instead which would more than cover your cost. Just an FYI. Have a great day.
  • You are lacking an item desription. Also the ad title is kind of generic. Maybe include the grade in the title.
  • After postage, ebay and Paypal fees, you may not net face value!

Correct me if I am wrong, but doesn't eBay require that the minimum donation for a charity is $10.00 per auction? That would mean that even though your coin sells for $5.00, for example, and you are donating 10%, youwill still have to give eBay the minimum $10.00. Maybe I misread something a while back, but that is what I thought.
  • Topcoin:

I didn't realize the shipping would be that high. I'll revise the shipping.

nccoin: I'm struggling about the grade. I don't want to put an unreasonably high grade on it and scare bidders away. In the item description (which you should be able to read now that I've fixed a problem with my HTML code) I say that the bidder should make the grade determination. I think the coin could go AU-55, maybe AU-58, though. That's just a wild-ass guess, though, since I'm not really a Mercury dime expert. What do you think of it, in terms of grade?

You're right about the $10.00 minimum. That sucks!! I was going to do the donation thing with this auction, but with those costs, I can't afford it unless someone grossly overbids. imageimage

  • I've revised the auction so that it should more closely cover my costs, if it sells. Unforutnately, you can't back out of the donation, so unless I cancel the auction altogether and relist, I'm stuck with it. I'm seriously considering relisting. I don't see any other way.

In most cases a coin will make it to a buyer just as fast in a bubble mailer as it will via priority mail. Your shipping amount for a coin like this will just scare off any bidders. Also if you would have started the auction at 99 cents I think you would have saved a few cents also.

Consider it a cheap lesson and a good learning experience.
  • If it was early teens I would have given you a high bid just to start you off. I like mercs, and thats a nice one. But I allready have 40s.
Do you have any nice early ones you want to list?

  • Hi, lonelyp, fairlaneman.

I don't have any earlier Mercs, unfortunately. This is one of only 2 that I own so far.

Fairlaneman: I'll take your advice and revise the shipping method and cost, as well as the starting price.

Geez, this auctioning is tough stuff! image

  • Hi, airplanenut.

The Stone House Coin Shop is right down the block from me. Unfortunately, it's got steps going in, and I'm in a wheelchair, so although I've passed by there many times, it remains a forbidden zone for me. image

You don't offer insurance on the auction?

  • Tim,

Because of the value of the item, I didn't think to offer insurance. I can always offer it when the winning bidder pays. I think the cost of insurance would be nominal. I will add that to the description of the auction.

    Everyone,

Thanks for all the advice on the auction!

its a nice acurate graded coin, 4.05 for shipping on a very common low value coin is high, many people dont even look when they see high shipping, too many other exact coins listed at reasonable shipping charges.

    Hi, Sam.

I have updated the auction with new shipping charges ($1).
