Lincoln Cent Collectors...Have you ever seen anything like this?

This DDO is a recent find of mine. I sent a few of these out to the professionals for their opinion, but they are kinda quiet at present. The one or two that are speaking about it don't say much other than they've never seen anything like it before. So I want to share this with you all and get your opinions if I may. In particular look at Lincolns beard. It seems to have been "smeared", I call the effect "fish-scaling". What do you think about this 2006P cent?

  • Is it my imagination or is Lincoln smiling? Doesn't he usually have a frown?

For those of us who aren't used to looking at coins under microscopes - perhaps you could point out any doubling that's supposed to be there?

Ok... The two photos where I show lighting coming from the right then light coming from the left is supposed to show the "fish-scaling" effect. It is very obvious when looking at it in hand. I've never seen anything like it and never heard of anything like it....

***********I'm asking you experts if you've ever seen anything like this "fish scaling" before. Is this a unique phenomenon?*************

There is thickness in the DATE, much like the 2004 DDO nickel, thichness in the lower portions of RUS in TRUST and in WE. There is thickness in some of the facial features that give Lincoln a slightly different expression.

I think you have a bit of Machine Doubling Damage, or Strike Doubling going on.

True Doubled dies have a directional shift in the same direction on the entire coin.

Your last close-up of LIBERTY shows a doubling on two different sides of RTY.

The die is also slightly mis-aligned, creating that streatched effect on the left of the coin.

    Is Lincoln smiling?

Any kind of MDD in the mouth area will give that impression, but given that new Master Hubs are created almost every year now..........who knows?

    Pete
