Circulation Find ...
DieVarieties

I recently went to 15 different banks buying up rolls and $25 boxes of cents. Slowly I'm going thru them and came across this one earlier today.
This made my day!!!! First time I have ever come across this 1980 1c FS-034 out of circulation. Heck -- if I don't find anything else, this made it worthwhile. Yep -- the thrill of the hunt pays off! I hope you find what your looking for ...

I tend to always search wheaties. One of these days I will open up my searches. Your 80 DDO looks to be in pretty good shape also
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
Nice DDO!
I wonder how many '80 cents I have searched for 25 years and finally come across this DDO in circulation. I guess the odds are way up there for me not to do this again on this particular DDO -- but, that's the thrill of the hunt. I hope it's not another 25 years!!!!!
Apropos of the coin posse/aka caca: "The longer he spoke of his honor, the tighter I held to my purse."
Nice coin Billy. Here is a little story about this doubled die...
I attended the Knoxville, TN monthly coin show several years ago with a good friend that now manages it. He was fairly tight with a local dealer who I had the pleasure to talk with. He had several boxes loaded with this variety freshly slabbed at NGC. Most graded between AU and MS-63 Red as I recall. I asked where he came accross them. His story was that a local fireman spent his spare time at the firehouse going through bags of mixed lincolns.
He also said he sent 100+ in to NGC and I have no doubt that he did. I could have had a sweet deal on a better one, unfortunately I didn't grab it.
I have about 15K wheats that I'd love to search through. When I start searching I catch myself just going through the motions like a robot and not really even looking at the coins. I just can't search them ............
I've been looking for that 1969 S doubled die since early 1967
well okay, it feels like longer... but you cherrypickers know what I mean.
Ask me no questions, I'll tell you no lies.
<< <i>Neat find. A couple of finds I've made in the past are a '98 wide AM and a neat '82 cud. >>
Smitty -- I like that '82 cud, that's a good one! Congrats on the 98 wide AM too. I still haven't come across the 99 wide AM yet. Have you? That's a tuff little sucker to find and can bring some hefty premiums.
Ohhh yeah!!!!! Now were getting started!! That's a couple of killer DDO's Mike!!! Congrats!!! '41 has smoe DDO's!!!
Ok -- bring em on!!! Let's go, geeze lets whip up a 100 thread for finds!!! Come on Russ -- whip out them Kennedy doubled dies -- I know you got em.....

Nope, I sure haven't found one yet. But it's not for lack of trying. The wide AM I found came from change at Walmart and I found the cud in a bank roll back a year or so ago. I bought 5 bucks worth at my bank to try my hand at searching. I have'nt searched much since aside from pocket change. I should get back into it and do what you're doing and get a $25 box.

really neat moderns. The rare coin was a '72-D DDR 25c. Unfortunately it was
before I started collecting these and I spent it. This coin was an unc so Northern
Indiana was probably the release point.
I've found three of the '70-D quarters struck on dime stock and a couple of the
'68 DDO dimes. The '79 type "d' reverse quarter was released here and I ig-
nored it at first since it seemed so very common. I did set a few aside as they
started disappearing into general circulation. I've found about a dozen '85-P
sm bust quarters and a couple '84-D/D 25c. I also have a couple rolls of early
clad quarters which are mules (they have the previous year's reverses). Most
are nice XF's. Most of these will prove to be condition rarities.
I usually find two or three spectacular gems each year as well. There are num-
erous other varieties which aren't coming to mind right now.
There are only a couple known of the '72-D quarter (DDR)(one unc, one AU).

Yeaaaaahhhhh!!! bring em on. Have you got a pic of that 72-D 25c DDR??? Would luv to see!!
edited to add: The best quarter I came across in circulation was the 1971 25c CONECA 1-R-I that I think was originally discovered by Natalie Halpern. It was an AU and I sold it on eBay and it brought $1050.
Heck -- that's an easy to see RPM in your pics exhibiting a super nice S/S north. Nice one! I don't have that one in my files. Congrats. Mike!!!
Looks like a Die #3 to me. Nice one!!! I came across the Die #8 the other day out of a circulated roll.
So -- do you think the Die #1 is still out there to be found???? But the one I really want to find is the Die #4!!!!
If I only had a dollar for every VAM I have...err...nevermind...I do!!

Yes Billy, I do think to Die #1 is still out there---There are a lot of jars of Lincoln's still used for those penny card games.
I too am on the lookout for Die #4, that is one tough variety.
Keep em coming folks ... I can handle the truth!!!!!!!!!
edited to add: Ooops! Sorry bout that John. I'm pretty good with varieties but dang horrible with names.
Come on -- we can at least make this a 50 ....
Here's my thoughts and of course this is only going by what I see in the photos. Actual examination of the coin, as you already know, is required to make a final determination.
From what I see in your pics of the '83-D Jeff -- I believe it is both. It is a DDR with the distinct notching and separation as well as some letters exhibit various portions of die deterioration doubling. I'm not trying to come across straddling the fence -- I do believe from what I see a genuine DDR there. It's just that it is also at a later die state which is exhibiting some die deterioration as well. I hope sometime I can examine the coin.

<< <i>Here is one for you to evaluate Billy. Here is an 83 D Jeff. I see no reference to a DDR for one of these. One of these days I will send this one in to be seen in person. These are notorious for die fatigue, so this one may not be a true DDR. What do you think?
>>
Cool.
This is another one to search for.
<< <i>I am looking for Die 4 & 5.....I swear they are hard to find...Are they rarer than the others, including the Die 1? >>
Mucho, mucho rarer than Die #1. Heck, a nice authenticated Die #4 will bring much higher premiums than Die #1!!!!!! The trick on Die #4 is getting it authenticated correctly. There are a few in TPG holders saying Die #4 and it's actually one of the other dies, usually Die #5 (old Die #10).
I will shoot out that 55 DDO-002 for you to photo and when I can find that Jeff DDR, I'll send it your way too. PM me your addy.

Holy #%^T*)$!!!!!! I ain't seen anything like that on a 50-D. What the heck! Sure looks like it. Dang John, where you been hiding all this stuff?????

Those are some nice ones! I always like those "tootsie-roll" extreme extra thickness doubled dies. They can be really wicked looking.
