What's the best method to remove a sticker from a coin?

I recently aquired a Peace $ that has an older sticker on it that I want to remove. The coin is xf/au. I've had it in acetone to try to remove it for a couple of days but it's very slow going.... Anyone here use something else that did the trick? How about adhesive remover?

I'd stick image with the acetone. It may take a few days, but it won't damage the coin. Be patient!

Try the WD40 on a test piece first - I've never tried it on a coin, but if anything will take that goo off, WD40 will.

If that doesn't work Goo Gone is another option - but I dont think it will work as well.

    Dude,

If it's xf/au, use your finger nail. It shouldnt hurt the coin.

Almost any cooking oil will dissolve the glue holding the sticker. Then the oil can be removed with acetone. Just soak the coin in the oil, peel off the sticker then soak in acetone until the oil is removed.

I like the WD40 idea, it shouldn't hurt the coin.

actually, the truth is, nothing cleans like water... If you put any jar in your dishwater for less than fifteen minutes, the glue/label and all of it comes off... Now that being said, imagine the difference in toning with exposure over the years and it sounds like a dead coin to me. Not that I use Calgon™ on my coins or anything, but hey, I would try the least intrusive substance known, first. And if it's a Peace dollar.... maybe the sticker did it justice image.

Almost completely OT, I have been trying to find a way to remove red pricing crayon markings on paper for a while. Any ideas? I bought a huge collection of very old sheet music with Art Nouveau and Art Deco covers from a liquidating thrift store years back. Some are outstanding and rare but I have refrained from trying to remove the price marks due to my related appreciation of not cleaning coins.

Go out and check your car battery or a relative's or a neighbor's car battery. If it's a Lead-Acid type, there will be a removable top covering the cells. Using a turkey baster, remove some and put directly into a small jar. Put your coin in this solution. Sticker, dirt, toning, rust, finger prints will all vanish. If this dosen't work, try a school lab for Concentrated Nitric Acid and Hydrochloric and mix together and put the coin in that for a few days. Guranteed to remove the sticker.

  • put some hand softning lotion on the sticker and wait 10 min
  • I have restored paper. old books and toy boxes covered in tape and glue. The best that I have found is plain old lighter fluid. it will desolve the glue and evaporate almost immediatley, I have covered early 1900s bookpages with it to remove old stickers and after a few minutes the stickers are able to be gently lifted (not scraped) with an xacto. If it works on paper and wont harm it. silver should be just fine.
  • How long does it need to soak in the oil......
