Who Will Inherit Collection Of Coins?

I find myself wondering sometimes who will Inherit my collection when I leave this world. God knows I don’t my collection to end up on Ebay as unsearched coins. Or sets of red boxes with my family member saying, “they don’t want to take the time to search the value of my coins”. Someone spent hours, years and money For family members to dispose if their collection.

I have always believed that we do not own our coins, we only pay for the right to care for them for a generation. I would like to have the bulk of my collection sold prior to my death unless one or more of my heirs in interested in them.

  • Try and have it designated in your Last Will and Testament? Spell right out who get's what? Also, If you are fortunate enough to know when it's colse to your time, Give it to them before your gone..... I'm a third generation collector...... I've seen my grandfater's collection "Disapear" and it was an awsome one at that. I also have wondered where my father's collection went?????? I have the one coin of his that i wanted most, A 1947 Mexico 50 Peso's Gold. I wouldn't take a million in cold hard cash for. I'd hate to think about my collection going thru Probate.

Not to mention any disagreement's about who got this or that, or one got less than the other. If you haven't gone through Will's and Probate, and the family free 4 all..... You haven't lived......lol.........image
  • My wife says that she will pile it all up and burn it to get everything out of the holders rake the coins out of the ashes and sell them for scrap.

  • I have 4 kids, and not one of them has an interest in coins, except to spend them. One of my sons who lives in Norway, just can’t understand why I would pay over a hundred dollars for a coin with a 1 Kroner face value. (about 15 cents US). His son, my grandson, was visiting here with his dad a couple of years ago, and his eyes just lit up when he saw some of my coins. I gave him a few hundred coins, and now he drives his dad (my son) crazy wanting to go to the coin store in Norway. He will get a great type set from Norway, as well as a couple other collections. I also have a granddaughter who collects things, and she will receive a few sets.

I will dispose of the others myself. I also have a very large Swedish plate that two collectors here in town want. I will probably tell my kids who to call and what some of the plate money and coins are worth.

It is a common problem, and last month at our local Coin Club one of the members gave a talk about just this subject.
