I'm hoping a lot of people are going to balk at the newer, higher prices. image I'd like to see mintages even lower than the 2004s.

Anyone interested in Platinum proofs at a steal, better buy now before pricing changes.

Just got a 1oz PP and trying to talk my wife into letting me get another... She's gonna have a great Mother's Day! image

I just picked up my 4-coin Platinum Proof Set at the Fed-Ex Office and I'm feeling some post-pick-up depression. The Coins look funny, having 4 with the same design is really goofy, $2750.00 was a lot of darned money to pay for such a thing. I'm thinking of returning the set and just getting a single 1 ounce Coin. That's the only one I really like anyways. Just got a little too clicky with the mouse the other night. image

You made the best buy though, the 4 coin set means you paid about $1486 an ounce, the single ounce is 1500 and they go up from there. Might want to hold off on sending those back for a few days--plat is not done yet.

I would hold off, too.. if Platinum does much more, the mint will probably do the same thing they did to the proof gold eagles. (If we're even sure what they *did* do to them)

Ordered a 1oz for my collection and a 1/10oz for someone else a couple days ago. Wish I could spring for a couple sets. I think platinum has a way to go.
  • given my limited budget which way should I go?

    The 1 ounce?

    or

    The 1/2 ounce?

Why not get 2 half ounces? You could have one for self, and one to sell.

  • I was thinking of that option as well regarding getting two 1/2 ounce coins. The 1/2 oz. are appealing given their low mintage (lowest of all the platinums).

Cool......and if you do end up buying (2) 1/2 ounces, just send one to me for helping.

Ok, Ok, I see your point.....I will settle for no less than (5) 1/10 ounces. imageimage

I've got a feeling that the price of platinum will keep going up. There's a lot of research going on in many different sciences for which platinum plays a key role. Therefore, the demand for platinum will probably stay high for a while. I don't own any 1-ounce platinum coins........... until now. image I just picked up a 1-ounce platinum maple leaf for $1,400. Thanks to a new job and a higher paycheck I figured now was the time to buy one. (Thank god for a full year of 0% financing on a credit card I have. Makes the payments at $400 a month a bit easier than one big payment of $1,400). When I bought my gold maple leaf in December I paid $530 for it. When I bought my palladium maple leaf last year, I paid $230 for it. I got my silver maple leaf a while ago for about $8. So each time I buy a maple leaf, the metal the maple leaf is made from goes up considerably. Look for platinum to soar! image

I like the 1 ounce better, it's a bigger Coin and of course that makes it easier to see. However, the 1/2 ouncer is still a good sized Coin and almost half the cost.

Why does the Mint have to put the same design on 4 Coins? Of course this might be a good thing because you can get away with just collecting one size. Still, for the compulsive collectors that feel the need to buy the 4-coin set, the sameness is a bit too much.

I think the 1 ounch is the most popular Coin out of the set, just look at the higher mintage vs the 1/2 and 1/4 sizes. Of course the 1/10 is produced in very high numbers but I think I can say the 1 ounce is still the most popular. IMHO the 1/10 buyers are settling for the low-ball price , most of them would probably rather have a larger coin. Of course maybe they just have better eye-sight than me.image

I am one of those 1/10 oz collectors of the platinum & gold proof eagles.....

And yes I have to settle for that size, so as not to blow my budget.....

I think I should probably order this coin today.....
