'70 World Series Game 1 Controversy

The other day I made a post about my Granddad taking me to the first two games of the World Series in 1970 between the Reds and the Orioles. I mentioned this particular play that happened in the sixth inning in game 1 with the game tied where Bernie Carbo tried to score the go ahead run from third on a chopper in front of the plate and the catcher tagged him with his empty glove with the ball in his other hand and the umpire called him out. Well I purchased this old Sporting News on e bay the other day and it had a story and a pic of this play, pretty cool, just thought you all might like to check it out. Anybody remember this play besides me ?

How in the world did the ump make the call facing the other way and blocking the plate ??

Elrod Hendricks the catcher shown here and a long time Orioles coach recently passed away. He has a little league named in his honor here in the Virgin Islands, which was where he was from......image

Okay, I'm 33, so I don't remember this play, or the '75 series, going from what I remember watching/reading later........

    Bernie Carbo was a Red??

Wasn't he the guy who fought off a couple of strikes with the worst swings in history before homering in the 7th to tie Game 6 in the '75 series???? The home run that tied the score, setting up Fisk in extra innings??? I didn't know he was a member of the Reds before that.

The Reds lost the world series with him, then won without him?? Is that the same guy??

    Just curioius.

Wow ! I just read the response of Sparky Anderson in the next to last paragraph about the call. I knew Sparky was a helluva guy but I didnt expect that. Can you imagine that call happening in a big game these days ? The opposing manager or team members would pistol whip the ump in the media.

It's 35 plus years later and Bernie Carbo STILL hasn't touched base yet!! Yes, Hendricks tagged him with an empty glove, but if you ever watch the replay, Carbo never touches home...........

I know what that newspaper account says, but if you ever watch the 1970 WS Highlight tape, you'll see (and I even believe they point it out) that Carbo doesn't touch home plate even while arguing. Obviously, the umpire was in the way of both Hendricks & Carbo (who later said he couldn't believe that Carbo would be trying to score on that play...he wasn't forced).
