Talk to me about 1 dollar gold type 1 and 2 pieces. I think they look REALLY cool but I know nothin

What would a goot date and grad be for a type set? Can I get a scarce one for under a grand?

Well the Indian Princesses come in two flavors and a variety of mint marks.

The small heads were minted in 1854-56 and are more pricey. The 1856 large head is the most common.

You can pick up a large head in MS63 for under $1000. They're small coins

    I like 1849 $1 for a Type 1 type coin in AU-58 ($300, maybe less)

Either P-mint Type 2 (1854 or 1855) can be had in AU-55 for under $1000 (but not much under).

I like the design of Type 2's better, in fact it's one of my favorite gold coin designs, but pick the one you like best and post it here when you get it. image
  • The type 2's are more expensive because of the demand for 'type set' examples. For a grand you are looking at au55-58 for the type 2 (1854,1855). For type I examples, you can get any of the Philadelphia mint issues in ms63 or so. If you are looking for a more scarce issue in type 1, look at the New Orleans mint issues in low mint state or nice au.

Type 1's, in general, come much nicer than type 2's. I agree with RYK's suggestion of a 1849, and I also like all the type 1 O mint coins (I'm a fan of New Orleans mint and this is a chance to get one cheaply).

Type 2's are tougher to find pretty. Weak strikes are the rule. I'd hunt for a nicely struck original surfaces AU example rather than for rarity in this series. All of type 2's are fairly rare and pricy due to mostly to type buying pressure. You're probably looking at a nice 1854 or 1855 in AU. You might also take a look at 1855-0 in XF, another coin I like.

    Take care...Mike

For Type 1, 1849 is usually the best struck and with sharpest details, it being the first year. If you get an O-mint type 1, you'll have to look longer to get one that's struck well. For a Type 2 in a type set, try and find an AU without clash marks that's struck well. 'twon't be easy, but you'll learn a lot about type 2 $1 in the process.
